Senior earns honor for the first time in her career
Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Deborah Hoekstra has been named Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday (Dec. 17). Hoekstra, a senior, earns the honor for the first time this season and the first time in her BGSU career.
Wednesday's announcement marked the third award this week for Hoekstra. On Monday (Dec. 15), she was named the MAC's Player of the Week, and she also earned league P-O-W honors from the College Sports Madness web site.
Hoekstra, a native of East Lansing, Mich. (East Lansing H.S.), set or matched career highs in multiple categories in the Falcons' lone game last week. Hoekstra made the first start of her collegiate career as the Falcons faced Saint Francis University on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 13), and she responded by scoring a career-high 22 points in BG's 76-62 win.
Hoekstra was 8-of-11 from the field, and hit 4-of-6 attempts from three-point range vs. the Red Flash. She tied career bests in field goals made and three-point field goals made, and also matched her career best with six rebounds. Hoekstra had three assists without committing a turnover, and also had a steal in the win.
On the year, Hoekstra is averaging 11.6 points per game, good for second on the team. She leads the Falcons in three-point field goals made, with 12.
In the classroom, Hoekstra maintains a perfect 4.000 cumulative grade-point average as a health science major.
The Falcons of head coach Jennifer Roos are 5-2 overall after the win over Saint Francis, and BGSU will continue a stretch of five consecutive games away from home this weekend. The Brown and Orange will travel to Illinois for a pair of games, facing Illinois State on Friday evening (Dec. 19) before meeting Bradley on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 21).
