The Falcons got key defensive plays and strong relief pitching to defeat the Bulls.
OXFORD, Miss. – The Bowling Green State University softball team jumped out to a 3-1 lead and never looked back against the University at Buffalo on Saturday night, eventually pulling off a hard-fought 4-2 victory in their second game of the night cap at the Red and Blue Classic. Earlier in the day, the Falcons (3-8-1) lost to Saint Louis University 11-1 in five innings.
GAME ONE – Saint Louis 11, Bowling Green 1
The Falcons totaled seven hits for one run in the game, as five freshmen combined for all of the Orange and Brown's hits in the game. Haley Schrock (2-for-3, RBI) and Amanda Durham (2-for-3) paced Bowling Green offensively, while Aspen Searle (1-for-2), Trista Mokienko (1-for-2) and Sami Parave (1-for-1) added singles in the contest.
The Billikens broke the game open in the third inning, totaling five hits for nine runs to hand them an early 9-0 lead. After Bowling Green got a quick out in the inning, Saint Louis's next nine batters reached base to score the first six runs of the game. The Billikens would add three more runs in the inning before the Falcons ended the third frame.
"I was disappointed with the way came out in game one," head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "We didn't come out ready to attack and Saint Louis did an excellent job of taking advantage of our mistakes."
After the Billikens added one more run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead, BGSU answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Mokienko, who entered the game on a two-game hitting streak, singled to the left side to jumpstart the inning. After Parave singled to the left side to advance Mokienko to third, Schrock singled in the Falcons' only run of the game.
H. Schrock continued her early season hitting streak to three games against the Billikens. Over H. Schrock's last three games, the freshman has gone 4-for-10 for a .400 batting average. Mokienko is also on a three-game hitting streak, going 3-for-7 for a .429 batting average.
GAME TWO –Bowling Green 4, Buffalo 2
The Orange and Brown rebounded in the second game of their doubleheader, totaling four runs on five hits in the game. Five different Orange and Brown members recorded a hit in the game. Senior captains Erika Stratton (1-for-2, RBI) and Katie Yoho (1-for-3, RBI) combined for two of the Falcons' four RBI in the contest. Freshmen Chelsea Raker (1-for-3), Trista Mokienko (1-for-3) and Sami Parave (1-for-2) accounted for the remainder of Bowling Green's hits in the contest.
"I was pleased with the way we rebounded against Buffalo," Salsburg said.
BGSU's sophomore Braiden Dillow started in the circle for the Falcons, allowing six hits for one earned run in 3.2 innings of work. Junior Jamie Kertes (1-6) relieved Dillow, throwing a perfect 3.1 innings and totaled two strikeouts to hold off the Bulls from rallying back.
The Falcons got on the board first for third time this season with a run in the top of the second. Stratton led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Yoho then followed with a triple that hit off the fence for her first RBI of the tournament, giving Bowling Green an early 1-0 led.
After the Bulls tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run, the Falcons bats stayed hot in the top of the third. After Parave reached second base on a throwing error, Raker singled to right field to score the Falcons' second run of the game. Stratton then followed with a hard hit ball to left field to score Raker for Bowling Green's third run of the game.
Leading 3-1, Buffalo cut the deficit in half with another run in the bottom of the third inning. However, with the Bulls threatening to take the lead, Searle made a nice diving catch to end the inning. The phenomenal catch led to four consecutive shutout innings where the Falcons did not allow another hit in the game.
"The team came out attacking and focused on playing our game," Salsburg said. "We did an excellent job of staying aggressive for the entire game and I believe that attack was the difference for us."
Mokienko extended her hitting streak to four games on the season by going 1-for-3 in the contest.
The Falcons will take the field for the final time at the Ole Miss Softball Complex Sunday morning (Feb. 23), taking on the University of Tennessee at Martin at 11:15 a.m. CST. The game will be a rematch of their 6-6 tie that took place last week. The game had to be called after eight innings due to travel plans at the Panther Invitational last week.
