Falcons now prepare for next weekend's MAC opener

The Bowling Green State University tennis team wound up with a split of two matches on the team's trip westward, falling to nationally-ranked Gonzaga University by a 7-0 score Thursday afternoon (March 13). The non-conference dual match was held at the Doral Desert Princess Resort in Palm Springs, Calif.

"Gonzaga is a very good team," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "We competed with them, but they were just a little too strong today.

"The three doubles matches were all so close, and a point difference here or there might have turned a result in our favor. But, this match will make us better, and it certainly helps us as we continue to get ready for MAC play."

All three doubles matches were closely-contested, but the Bulldogs pulled out the win at each of the three flights. Both the second- and third-flight matches ended up going to the Zags by 8-6 scores.

Falcon freshmen Hannah Drayton and Harley Hutchison fell by an 8-6 final for the second-straight day, dropping their Thursday match vs. Alexandra Tallas and Katie Edwards at the third flight.

The second flight saw GU's Isabell Klingert and Melanie Yates squeak past senior Nikki Chiricosta and sophomore Katie Brozovich by an identical 8-6 final, while Kylie Peek and Samantha Polayes picked up an 8-5 victory over senior Emily Reuland and soph Drew Fillis.

In singles play, the Bulldogs swept all six matches. Chiricosta battled Peek to a tiebreaker at the number-one flight, with each player winning a 6-2 set. But, Peek captured the 'breaker to win the match.

At the third flight, Polayes just got past Brozovich in each set, winning the first by a 6-4 score and capturing the second, 7-5. Hutchison dropped a narrow 7-5 second set in her match vs. Klingert at the fifth flight.

The Falcons return to the Midwest to prepare for the Mid-American Conference opener next weekend. The Brown and Orange will host Western Michigan on Saturday, March 22, in a 1:00 p.m. start. That match will be held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, weather permitting.
