Alyssa Nocella named First Team All-Conference; Megan Harrington and Lauren Feely earn Second Team honors
Cleveland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team had one of its strongest seasons in recent history and the team was awarded with three MAC All-Conference athletes today. Sophomore Alyssa Nocella was named to the five-person first-team, while senior Megan Harrington and freshman Lauren Feely were two of the five second-team honorees as voted on by the league's coaches and announced today. No other Mid-American Conference school had more than two all-conference award winners.
Bowling Green improved to 4-2 in MAC competition this year, one win better than last year's 3-3 finish. It marks the third consecutive year in which the Falcons have increased their league win total since going 0-6 in 2011. And with the recognition of both a freshman and a sophomore to the all-conference awards, BGSU is positioned for future success as well.
Nocella is just the second Falcon named first team all-conference since Marny Oestreng earned the honor for three straight years from 1999-01 and won a national championship. Dawn Christman received first team All-MAC honors in 2010 as the only other honoree in that time frame. She is the 18th different BGSU gymnast to be named first team all-conference.
With the team's top floor routine score this year, Nocella has anchored the Falcons' lineup. She scored a 39.350 in the all-around at Kent State, a score that only two other Falcons in program history have surpassed. She also had a career-best 9.900 on floor at that meet, one of the top 10 scores ever at BGSU. Nocella has also posted personal best scores of 9.875 on balance beam, 9.850 on uneven bars and 9.800 on vault. Four times this year she has recorded an all-around score of 39.000 or better and she has the second-highest all-around regional qualifying score in the MAC this year.
Harrington earned MAC second-team all-conference honors for the second consecutive season. She has been dominant on floor this year, posting a 9.900 at Kent State and recording three of the team's six scores of 9.875 or better this year on the apparatus. Harrington has also posted a 9.850 on the balance beam twice and a 9.800 on vault. She scored a personal best 39.100 at the Chicago Style Meet in the all-around and added a 39.075 against Central Michigan.
Feely made an immediate impact for the Falcons in her first collegiate season. She has been one of the team's most consistent vaulters, scoring a team season-best 9.900 in the event. Six other times Feely has scored at least 9.800 on vault this year. She has also spent considerable time competing in the all-around, posting a personal best 38.975 at the Chicago Style Meet.
Bowling Green completed the regular season with a record of 7-9 on the season. The Falcons will compete in the MAC Championship Saturday at Eastern Michigan beginning at 2 p.m. BGSU will be one of the favorites to compete for the title.
