Hoover, Ala. – Bowling Green State University shot a team low round of 302 over the third round of play on Tuesday afternoon, as the Falcons finished in 10th-place overall at the 2014 Samford Intercollegiate hosted by Samford University at the Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala.
The men's golf team, which shot the second lowest par 3 scoring average of 3.41, +31, as a team for the two-day event, carded rounds of 312, 316 and 302 to finish in 10th-place overall on the team leaderboard with a 54-hole team score of 930, +66.
The Falcons finished ahead of Eastern Kentucky (934), Western Carolina (937), Samford (939), University of Montevallo (958), Southern Illinois (970) and Miles College (1155).
BGSU was led by freshman Brett Rinker who finished in a tie for 22nd-place overall with his combined three-round score of 229, +13. Rinker carded rounds of 77, 78 and 74 to lead the Falcons.
Junior Joe Cooper and senior Chris Melvin both finished tied for 43rd-place overall with an identical score of 236, +20. Cooper posted rounds of 76, 85 and 75 over his three rounds of play, while Melvin bounced back from a first round 84 on Monday morning to post two straight 76's for his final score of 236.
Rounding out the scoring for the Falcons was freshman Jose Narro and junior Ryan Triller. Narro, who led BGSU after round one of play with a 75 on Monday morning, struggled with an 87 second round score, before bouncing back with a final round 77 to finish in a tie at 53rd-place overall with a combined score of 239, +23. Triller recovered from a first round 91 to shoot a 77 and 78 over the next two rounds to finish with a combined score of 246, +30, and a 76th-place finish.
As individuals, senior Joshua Bialecki and sophomore Holden Pahr placed in ties at 69th and 76th, respectively. Bialecki carded rounds of 88, 75 and 80 to post a three-round score of 243, +27, while Pahr turned in 18-hole scores of 85, 79 and 82 to finish with a score of 246, +30.
South Alabama posted team scores of 306, 294 and 291 to finish with a tournament low team score of 891, +27, and edge the University of Alabama-Birmingham, who carded an 839, +29, for first-place overall by two strokes.
Bowling Green will return to the links for competition in just over two weeks when the Falcons will take part in the 2014 Desert Shootout hosted by Kansas State University at the Palm Valley Country Club in Goodyear, Ariz. on March 20-22.
