Rio Verde, Ariz. – Bowling Green State University sophomore Lily Bartell paced the Falcons with a 73, +2, over the first round of play at the 12th annual Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational hosted by Western Michigan at the Quail Run Golf Course at the Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Ariz.
Overall as a team, the Falcons carded a first round score of 309, +25, to sit in 11th-place on the team leaderboard after 18 holes of play on Friday.
Bartell turned in three birdies en route to her first round score 73, +2, as the sophomore posted an even par 35 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine to stand in a tie for fifth-place overall through one round of play. Bartell is only two strokes off the lead.
Both junior Shelby Wilson and senior Bailey Arnold each posted a first round 78, +7, on Friday to finish day one in a tie for 40th overall, as Wilson (39-39) birdied hole 12 and Arnold (41-37) totaled three birdies overall with two coming on the back nine.
Rounding out the scoring for BGSU on day one of play was junior Patricia Holt and sophomore Hannah Lewis. Holt and Lewis both shot a first round 80, +9, as each posted a 39 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine over their first 18 holes of golf in Arizona to place in a tie at 65th overall heading into the second round of play on Saturday.
Montana leads the event after one round of play with a team score of 298, +14, sitting one stroke ahead of second-place Wichita State who carded a team score of 299, +15, over the first round of play.
Sydney Brickey of Northern Illinois leads the field after round one of play with her 71, even par, on Friday afternoon, as she holds a one stroke lead over Frida Fougberg of Akron, Tara Green of Montana and Kaitlen Parsons of Northern Arizona who all carded scores of 72, +1.
Round two of play will begin on Saturday, March 8, at 8 a.m. PT with a shotgun start.
