Rinker’s Strong Final Round Leads Falcons at The Rutherford

State College, Pa. – Bowling Green State University freshman and Pennsylvania native Brett Rinker carded a Falcon low round 69, -2 under par, on Sunday to post a top-10 finish and lead BGSU to a seventh-place team finish at The Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State University in State College, Pa.
Bowling Green as a team posted rounds of 295, 288 and 301 to finish in seventh-place overall out of the 14 team field with a combined 54-hole score of 884, +32. It marks the second straight year in which the Falcons have finished in seventh overall at The Rutherford Intercollegiate.
BGSU's Rinker improved over each and every round of play over the weekend, as the freshman who turned in rounds of 77 and 71 on Saturday, shot a final round 69, -2 under par, on Sunday to finish with a 54-hole score of 217, +4, and in a tie for ninth-place overall. The freshman totaled a team-high nine birdies over his three-rounds of play.
Fellow freshman Jose Narro and junior Joe Cooper both finished in a tie for 24th-place overall. Narro carded rounds of 72, 73 and 76 to post his 54-hole score of 221, +8, while Cooper recorded scores of 73, 71 and 77 for his combined score of 221, +8, over the two-day event. Narro posted six birdies overall and a team-high 35 pars, while Cooper collected eight birdies over the 54-hole event.
Both Chris Melvin and Holden Pahr finished out the Falcons' lineup, as each struggled with consistency on the final day. Melvin turned in a round of 79, +8, on Sunday after registering rounds of 77 and 73 on Saturday, while Pahr shot an 82, +11, over the final round of play following a 73 and 76 over the first two rounds. Melvin, who carded seven birdies, finished in a tie for 57th-place overall with a combined score of 229, +16. Pahr's 231, +18, placed him in a tie for 65th overall, as he had seven birdies as well for the weekend.
Playing as an individual, the Falcons' Ryan Triller also recorded seven birdies over his three rounds of 75, 69 and 77 to finish in a tie for 24th overall with a combined score of 221, +8.
Minnesota held on to win the event with a team score of 860, +8, despite shooting a combined team score of 296, +12, on Sunday. Seton Hall (872, +20) took second-place overall, while Connecticut (876, +24) and Rutgers (876, +24) finished tied for third overall to round out the top-three on the team leaderboard.
Day one leader Jose Mendez of Minnesota held on to pick up the first-place victory with a 54-hole score of 207, -6 under par, while Seton Halls' Lloyd Jefferson finished runner-up with his score of 210, -3 under par.
BGSU will have just 11 days off before returning to competition at the 2014 MAC Championships on May 1-3. This year's conference championship tournament will be held at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.
