Bowling Green, Ohio – This weekend the Bowling Green State University men's golf team will tee-off at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships on May 2-4 at the Prairie View Golf club in Carmel, Indiana.
Hosted by the University of Toledo, the MAC Men's Golf Championship will be held at the par-72, 7,073-yards Prairie View Golf Club for the first-time ever and for just the fifth time in the state of Indiana. Consistently rated among the top courses in Indiana, Prairie View Golf Club has hosted nearly all major Indiana PGA and Indiana Golf Association championships.
The tournament field this year will consists of nine MAC teams in Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Kent State and Toledo, with each team comprised up of five players with the lowest four scores counting towards the team score each round.
Bowling Green head coach Kevin Farrell will send out a familiar lineup in Chris Melvin, Brett Rinker, Joe Cooper, Jose Narro and Ryan Triller.
Making his fourth straight MAC Championship appearance is Melvin, as the senior has posted finishes of 39th (2010-11), 16th (2011-12) and 27th (2012-13) in each of the last three conference postseason events. Having posted five top-20 finishes, seven sub-par rounds of golf and a stroke average of 74.00 over 27 rounds of play on the year, Melvin will look to finish his Falcon career on a high note with a strong showing at this year's MAC Championships.
Rinker will be teeing-off in his first MAC Championship event this weekend, as the freshman leads the team with a 73.41 stroke average over 27 rounds of play on the year. The Frank Fuhrer III Watch List member has posted back-to-back top-10 finishes over the last two tournaments, registering a fourth-place finish at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational and a ninth-place showing at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. Over his last six rounds of play, Rinker has carded an average of 72.17.
Having posted a 28th overall finish at the 2013 MAC Championships, Cooper will look to improve on that this season in his second conference championship event. The junior has posted two straight top-25 finishes over the Falcons' last two events, which included an 11th-place finish at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational. He has carded his three lowest rounds of the spring season (71, 73, and 74) over his last six rounds of play and has posted back-to-back 54-hole combined scores of 221. On the year, Cooper has recorded a 75.33 stroke average over 21 rounds of play.
Like Rinker, Narro will be making his first appearance at the MAC Championships as the freshman is second on the team with a stroke average of 73.52 on the year. Narro, who also like Rinker, has a BGSU low round 67 on the season, is coming off a 24th-place finish at the Rutherford Intercollegiate last time out. However, over his last nine rounds of play Narro has turned in a stroke average of 71.67 which has included rounds of 67, 69, 70, 71, and 72, as well as a first-place individual finish at the Greenbrier Collegiate Intercollegiate.
Last year at the 2013 MAC Championships, BGSU's Triller carded rounds of 74, 73, 77 and 75 to lead the Falcons with a 72-hole score of 299 to finish in a tie for ninth-place overall. Just like last season, Triller is coming off perhaps his best performance of the spring season at the Rutherford Intercollegiate in which he carded a season-low round 69 over the second round of play. The junior, who has three top-25 finishes and a stroke average of 75.96 over 27 rounds of play this year, will look once more to have a strong performance at this year's championships.
BGSU finished fifth overall last year at the 2013 MAC Championships, the Falcons' highest finish since posting a second-place finish in 1994-95.
The Falcons have five MAC Titles overall with the last one coming in 1982-83.
The teams will play 36-holes or two rounds of play on Friday, May 2nd, and then will play 18-holes of play over each of the next two days, May 3rd and May 4th.
Tee-times for day one will begin at 8:30 a.m. and go through 10:06 a.m. with teams starting on both hole-1 and hole-10. BGSU will be teeing off starting at 9:34 a.m. on hole-10 on Friday morning.
The tee-times over the next two days will go from 7:50 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. off of hole-1.
