Basalyga, Falcons Announce Fall 2014 Schedule
April 24, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Regular-season slate includes eight matches at Cochrane Field
The home slate includes five Mid-American Conference matches, with visits to Cochrane by East Division foes Ohio and Kent State and West Division opponents Central Michigan, Toledo and Eastern Michigan. The EMU match will close the home portion of the schedule in late October.
"I'm really looking forward to the schedule we've put together for 2014," said Basalyga. "We will be a very young team this fall, and I think our schedule is well balanced to test and prepare us for the start of MAC play."
Prior to beginning the MAC slate, the Brown and Orange will play seven non-conference matches, including home games against Morehead State (August 22), Cleveland State (Sept. 5) and Detroit (Sept. 14). The Morehead State match marks the regular-season opener for both teams, and is the first of back-to-back games against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships last year. Morehead State won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title in 2013.
Following the opener vs. MSU, the Brown and Orange will play the next two games on the road, beginning with the program's first-ever matchup against Michigan (Sept. 24). The Wolverines won 18 matches last year, finished second in the Big Ten Conference with a 9-1-1 league record and advanced to the round of eight in the NCAA Championships before losing to top-rated Virginia.
BGSU will take on Evansville (Sept. 29) in the first of three games in the state of Indiana in a month's time. After the home matches vs. Horizon League foes CSU and UDM, the Brown and Orange will head to Butler (Sept. 19) and Chicago State (Sept. 21) to close the non-league schedule. Both Detroit and Butler won 11 matches last season, while Chicago State is fielding a women's soccer program for the first time in the 2014 season.
BG begins MAC play, and continues a season-long, six-match road swing, with matches at Ball State (Sept. 26) and Miami (Sept. 28) on the opening weekend of the conference schedule. BGSU battled MU, the 2013 MAC East Division champion, to a 1-1 draw at Cochrane Field last season.
The next weekend sees the Falcons take on Buffalo (Oct. 3) and Akron (Oct. 5) to begin the month of October. BG then returns to Northwest Ohio for four-straight matches at Cochrane Field, the team's longest homestand of 2014. BG will face CMU (Oct. 10) and UT (Oct. 12), before wrapping up intradivisional play with matches vs. Ohio (Oct. 17) and KSU (Oct. 19). The Ohio and KSU matches mark BG's only home games against East Division foes, after the Falcons played just one East opponent (Miami) at Cochrane Field last season.
BG's final road trip of the regular season sees the team face Western Michigan (Oct. 24) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 26), before Eastern Michigan comes to town for an Oct. 30 match. WMU won the West Division, captured the MAC Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships last season, while EMU finished second in the West.
The 2014 MAC Tournament will begin on Sunday, Nov. 2, with quarterfinal-round games at campus sites. The four survivors from that day's play will converge upon the site of the highest-remaining seed for the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 7, and the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 9. The MAC Tournament winner earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAAs.
Prior to beginning the 2014 regular season, the Falcons will play three exhibition matches at home, facing UIC (Aug. 12) and Wright State (Aug. 15).
The complete 2014 schedule follows. Kickoff times will be added to the women's soccer schedule page here at BGSUFalcons.com in the coming weeks.
