BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Eastern Michigan University Saturday (April 26) afternoon, falling to the Eagles by a score of 3-0 at Meserve Field. The Falcons (20-28-1, 6-11 MAC) received a strong pitching performance by junior Jamie Kertes, but the Eagles (12-31, 3-12 MAC) held the Orange and Brown scoreless to take the first game of the two-game series.
Junior Jamie Kertes started her 29th game of the season in the circle for the Falcons. Kertes (12-20) allowed two earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work in the losing effort.
Five different players recorded a hit in the contest for the Falcons. Amanda Durham (1-for-4), Chelsea Raker (1-for-4), Madison Schrock (1-for-3), Aspen Searle (1-for-3), and Erika Stratton (1-for-3) all collected a hit in the game. Out of those five hits, two went for extra base hits as both Durham and Stratton recorded doubles.
Kertes (12-20), who was credited with a tough loss, began the game with two scoreless innings, but the Eagles finally broke through in the top of the third inning with a single run.
After a leadoff single and eventually moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, the Eagles scored the game's first run with the help of the Falcon defense. Kertes forced a ground ball to third base for the second out, but an over thrown ball back to third base in an attempt to take out the rounding Eagles' base runner sailed high, allowing EMU to take an early 1-0 lead.
Kertes worked hard throughout the game to keep the Orange and Brown as close to the Eagles as she could, retiring the Eagles side of the order in the top half of the fourth inning to keep the game at 1-0. In all, Kertes had three innings where she retired the side of the Eagles' order, and totaled three strikeouts on the day.
However, with one swing of the bat, Eastern Michigan extended their lead to its largest of the game. In the top of the fifth inning, Kertes recorded two quick outs but walked Amanda Stanton to give Lindsay Rich an opportunity. Rich followed the walk with a two-out home run over the left field fence to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Needing at least three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend the game, the Falcons went down fighting. Searle led off the inning with a walk and Durham followed by reaching base on an error to hand the Orange and Brown two base runners with no outs. Bowling Green's tying run game up to bat, three times, but the Falcons could not record a hit to end the game.
The Falcons will be back in action tomorrow (April 27) afternoon, taking on Eastern Michigan in the second game of the MAC weekend series. First pitch is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
