Falcons Close Season At NCAA Regionals
April 05, 2014 | Gymnastics
Baton Rouge, La. – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team had three team members compete in the all-around in the NCAA Regional Championships as the Falcons represented at the Baton Rouge Regional, hosted by LSU.
Sophomore Alyssa Nocella was the team's top finisher, scoring a 39.150 to place ninth in the all-around. Senior Megan Harrington closed out her career tied for 10th with a 38.925 and junior Gina Locigno placed 12th with a 38.400.
Nocella's ninth-place finish was the best for a Falcon since Marny Oestreng won the floor and tied for third on bars in 1999. In fact, her 39.150 all-around score was the best ever for a BGSU athlete at the NCAA Regional Championships.
All three Falcons had competed in the all-around at NCAA Regionals previously, but they each set career NCAA Regional bests. Nocella bettered her score from a year ago, while Harrington was better than each of the past two years. Locigno was stronger than her lone regional appearance in 2012.
Of the 42 competitors at regionals, Nocella tied for 15th on the floor with a strong 9.850. She posted at least a 9.750 in all four rotations to show consistency across the board.
Harrington tied her career-high on the balance beam with a 9.850 and scored an identical 9.850 on floor to tie Nocella for 15th on the event. Locigno added a 9.800 on floor and scored 9.725 on vault.
With the results, Bowling Green's season comes to a close. The Falcons improved their Mid-American Conference win total for the third consecutive season, going 4-2 in league action. BGSU also placed third at the MAC Championships, the program's best result at the meet in 22 years. The Falcons graduate three seniors in Harrington, Lacey Swords and Megan Valentini, but return a strong nucleus that should have the Falcons in the hunt for a MAC Championship again in 2015.
