OXFORD, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team spoiled a good start by Brett Fitzwater on Saturday afternoon, falling on the road to Miami, 3-1. The Falcons managed just four hits against Miami starter Nathan Williams, who went 8.2 innings for the win. The RedHawks improved to 22-24 on the season with the win, and 12-8 in Mid-American Conference play. BGSU drops to 20-22 overall and 10-10 in MAC play.
Miami scored first in Saturday's game, as the leadoff batter singled to begin the contest. Dan Walsh, the very next batter, would triple into the right field corner allowing Miami to move on top, 1-0. Fitzwater would work out of the jam, however, as the next batter hit a line drive which first baseman Jeremy Shay picked off the turf for an out, and tossed to third to complete the double play. A strikeout from the southpaw ended the threat.
Fitzwater pitched a career-high six innings in the game, allowing just two runs while striking out three.
The Falcons tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI double off the bat of T.J. Losby. After Jeremy Shay had walked to give the Falcons a base runner, Losby would line a pitch into the gap between center and right to score Shay all the way from first.
Shay paced the Falcon offense on Saturday afternoon, as he was on base all four times. Twice, Shay reached courtesy of a walk, while the other two times he was hit by a pitch.
Miami would take the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, as Fitzwater hit the leadoff batter with a pitch. After a single and a sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position, the RedHawks would break the tie with a sac fly to center field.
In the bottom of the seventh, the RedHawks would get a leadoff base runner via a single to right-center field. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position, Ryan Elble would line a triple off the top of the wall in right field. Had it not been for a spectacular leaping grab by Jesse Rait once the ball had hit the fence, Elble's ball would have caromed over the wall for a two-run home run.
The Falcons would get two runners on with two outs in the ninth to force Miami to turn to their bullpen, but the Orange and Brown could not muster any more offense in the loss.
Bowling Green will attempt to salvage the series on Sunday afternoon, when they take on the RedHawks at 1:00 p.m. Andrew Lacinak will take the mound for the Falcons.
