Pleger Feature Story
Eugene, Ore. – Bowling Green State University redshirt junior Brooke Pleger returns to the NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships Wednesday when she competes in the hammer throw for the second consecutive season. Pleger, who finished seventh a year ago and earned first team All-America honors, is the No. 2 seed this year.
Â
The hammer throw will begin at 4:30 pm ET Wednesday. Pleger placed second at the East Regional preliminary round and posted the second-best distance among the two regions. She also has the second-best hammer throw during the regular season. Pleger threw 216-feet-2 at the east regional to finish behind only Princeton's Julia Ratcliffe, who had a mark of 221-6. Colorado's Emily Hunsucker won the West Regional preliminary round with a throw of 210-2.
Â
Pleger is one of three Mid-American Conference hammer throwers in the 24-person field at the NCAA Championships. Akron's Brittany Funk is the No. 3 seed after tossing 211-4 in the regional and her teammate Alexis Cook went 196-11 to place 10th at the regional to qualify for the meet.
The meet is divided randomly into two flights of 12 athletes each. Pleger will throw in the second flight, along with No. 3 seed Funk. Ratcliffe and Hunsucker, the No. 4 seed, compete in the first flight. Each student-athlete will have three attempts in prelims and the top nine will move onto the finals for three more tosses.
Â
Only five Falcons have ever scored points at an NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field National Championship (Beth Manson placed in the discus twice) and none have placed higher than sixth. Only Manson has been a two-time All-American, finishing eighth in the discus in 1988 and sixth in 1989.
