Four Falcons Named Academic All-MAC
July 08, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
Cleveland, Ohio – Four members of the Bowling Green State University outdoor track and field team have been named Academic All-MAC, as announced today by the league office. Tina Perrine, Jeanette Pettigrew, Brooke Pleger and Natalie Sommerville were each honored with the award. Four others earned honorable mention nods – Andrea Alt, Mackenzie McMillin, Becca Rae and Krystin Reiser.
The Academic All-MAC honor is given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have a least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Perrine is a graduate student at Bowling Green with a 3.625 grade point average in criminal justice. An NCAA Regional qualifier in both the discus and the hammer throw, she was a key performer in her lone year with the Falcons. Perrine posted the team's best discus throw of the year at 164-feet-3 to win the Toledo Dual and placed 10th at the MAC Championships in the event. She set a personal best in the hammer throw at the NCAA Regional preliminary meet with a toss of 188-9 to finish 19th after placing fourth at the MAC Championships.
Pettigrew is also a graduate student in the school of human movement, sport, and leisure studies with a GPA of 3.454. On the track, she was a second team All-MAC performer who qualified for the NCAA Regional preliminary meet in both the 100 and 200. She scored points for the Falcons in the 100, 200 and long jump at the MAC Championships, finishing second in the 100, third in the 200 and fifth in the long jump. Pettigrew also ran the second leg of the 400 relay team that place fifth at the MAC Championships.
Pleger holds a 3.72 grade point average in nursing and was an All-American and third team Academic All-American this year after placing third at the NCAA National Championships in the hammer throw. She is only the second two-time All-American in BGSU history and was also named the Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year. She was first team All-MAC after breaking her own MAC Championship record to win the hammer throw for the second straight year. Pleger was undefeated in the hammer throw during the regular season and set facility records at Bowling Green, Cincinnati and Kentucky. The No. 2 ranked hammer thrower this year, she owns all of the top 10 hammer throws in BGSU history.
Sommerville boasts a 3.943 grade point average in biology and recorded one of the most surprising performances by a BGSU student-athlete at the MAC Championships this year. She set a new personal best in the 400 hurdles prelims to qualify for the finals of the event in seventh place after entering the meet as the No. 9 seed. She then shattered her PR in the finals with a run of 1:01.08 to finish fifth. Sommerville also ran on the 1600 relay team that placed eighth at the MAC Championships.
BGSU completed a successful outdoor season by scoring 60 points at the MAC Championships, almost triple the team's total of 23 from a year earlier. The Falcons placed seventh overall at the meet and sent five student-athletes to the NCAA Regionals to compete in eight events. Pleger went on to the NCAA National Championships and boasted the top result in BGSU women's track and field history with a third-place finish in the hammer throw.
