Falcons Return To Campus
August 18, 2014 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams returned to campus Sunday and held their first official practice of the 2014 season Monday, Aug. 18.
In his fourth year as head coach, Lou Snelling looks to improve upon both teams' regional finishes from last season. The women placed 17th out of 33 teams at the NCAA Great Lakes regional meet this past November and the men finished 25th out of 31.
"We are all excited to start a new cross country season," Snelling said. "Everyone has been working hard over the summer to prepare for the fall. This first week back is intense, we have been talking about goals and expectations for this season since the last cross country season. We take this time before school starts to finalize those thoughts into an actionable plan for the fall."
The women return all of their runners who competed in last year's MAC Championships, and add three incoming freshmen to the team as well.
"It will be exciting to see who steps into our top five this fall," Snelling said. "We are the deepest and most able since I have been at BG, which has been the trend each year. There is the real potential to put our best team on the starting line at the MAC Championships in many years."
The men's squad is comprised of mainly underclassmen, including three freshmen and five redshirt freshmen. Greg Black will lead the team as the sole redshirt senior for the Falcons.
Our men are committed to setting a standard for the strong work ethic required to see the improvement necessary to become competitive in the Mid-American Conference," said Eric Thatcher, men's assistant coach. "I am looking forward to seeing how our group of new faces with over the half the roster beginning their first year learns to work together in workouts and on the course this fall."
BGSU will open the regular season Friday, Aug. 29 at the Toledo Invitational. The Falcons will then host their lone home meet of the season with the annual Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational Sept. 12 at 6:30 pm.
