Senior earns honor for the second time in less than a month
Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Deborah Hoekstra has been named Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday (Jan. 7). Hoekstra, a senior, earns the honor for the second time this season and the second time in her BGSU career.
Hoekstra, a native of East Lansing, Mich. (East Lansing H.S.), led the team in multiple categories last week. She averaged 9.7 points per game to tie for the team lead, and the guard paced the Falcons with 6.7 rebounds per game.
Hoekstra had a career-high nine rebounds in the Falcons' game at FIU last Tuesday (Dec. 30), and she matched that total with nine boards in Saturday's (Jan. 3) Ball State game. Hoekstra was named to the all-tournament team at the FIU Sun & Fun Classic earlier this week. The senior scored a team-high 13 points against Hampton (Dec. 29), then had seven points and the nine rebounds vs. FIU, along with two assists and two steals. In the Ball State game, she just missed a double-double, with nine points and nine more rebounds.
On the season, Hoekstra is averaging 10.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, and leads the Falcons with 19 three-point field goals made. Hoekstra is also shooting 90.6% from the free-throw line, having gone 29-of-32.
Hoekstra also earned the MAC's S-A-O-W award on Dec. 17. That week, she also was named the MAC's Player of the Week, and she earned league P-O-W honors from the College Sports Madness web site.
In the classroom, Hoekstra maintains a perfect 4.000 cumulative grade-point average as a health science major.
The Falcons of head coach Jennifer Roos are 7-5 overall, and the Falcons are 0-1 in the MAC heading into Wednesday night's game against the University of Akron. BG returns to the road for a Saturday (Jan. 10) contest vs. Kent State University, before hosting Northern Illinois University on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
