BGSU Athletics Supports Local Schools Through Extra Yard For Teachers Program
October 16, 2015 | General
The Bowling Green State University Athletic Department recently supported local students at Crim Elementary through the College Football Playoff Foundation's Extra Yard for Teachers program. Stacey Higgins, who is a second grade teacher at Crim, is raising money for an ELMO document camera in her classroom. Thanks to the support of BGSU Athletics and others in the community, Mrs. Higgins is just $125 away from her $800 goal. To join BGSU Athletics in supporting Mrs. Higgins' students at Crim Elementary and help them reach their goal, please CLICK HERE to learn more or to donate.

"BGSU Athletics is proud to team up with not only the College Football Playoff Foundation's Extra Yard for Teachers program, but also with local schools to support such worthy causes," Kit Hughes, Senior Associate Athletic Director, said. "It is important for us to realize the value and role that Athletics can have in the Bowling Green community, and find ways to use our platform to support and enhance local programs whenever possible. We are thrilled that Crim Elementary participated in this process through the CFP, and are excited to support Mrs. Higgins' class project."

A Message From Mrs. Higgins
This ELMO document camera will allow us to quickly project students' work and other resources onto our interactive Smartboard. We will be able to collaboratively create, revise, and complete work in writing, math, and all of our content areas. Students will literally be a part of the work in the moment, as the camera projects the actual writing of the hand, the movement of the pen. We will be able to project three dimensional artifacts and tools. We'll be able to share books, zooming in on specific details or text. We'll be able to have teachers and students lead the class in step by step procedures that everyone can see and access.
Â
"An ELMO projector would be an incredible teaching and learning tool in my classroom," Higgins said. "It would enhance student learning and access to materials by allowing us to project student work 'in the moment' and to explore three-dimensional objects with large groups at a time. This would increase student engagement and achievement. As a 1997 Alumnus of the Bowling Green State University graduate reading program, I am keenly aware of the power of partnership between BGSU and our community schools, and am so grateful for this generous support.
Â
"Without a document camera, I can try to scan 2D materials into the computer and project them at a later time, but this removes the immediate impact that captivates young students' attention and imagination," Higgins continued. The ability to share 3D artifacts, texts, and math manipulatives so that all students can see and participate will also enhance engagement and performance.
Â
Our classroom is a community. It is a community at the center of others: grade level, school, city, state, country, and world. My role as teacher is to facilitate my students' navigation of these communities, as we expand their horizons. Technology is an important tool for this expansion.
"Teachers spend large amounts of their own money each year to make sure their students academic, social-emotional and physical needs are met," Crim Principal Melanie Garbig said about the project's importance. "Social media sites such as "Donor's Choose" are vital in supporting projects of greater cost. The ELMO projector is a wonderful tool for 2nd graders. It will allow Mrs. Higgins the opportunity to share quickly and efficiently with the larger group."Â

About The CFP Extra Yard For Teachers Program
While there are many causes deserving of the College Football Playoff Foundation's support, the primary cause we support is education. Our focus is specifically on teachers. College football is the most readily-visible representation of students achieving their dreams of attending college. This road to college is often attributed to the support and commitment of gifted teachers. Teachers are often underpaid and under-appreciated, resulting in them incurring substantial out-of-pocket expenses and above-average turnover rates. It's time we go the extra yard for those who have gone the extra yard for us.
