Walny Earns MAC Freshman Of The Year Award

Redshirt freshman Rachel Walny was named Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year this weekend at the MAC Championships. She has had a stellar cross country season thus far. At the championships Walny placed fifth overall with a time of 21:06.90.
Walny started out her collegiate career by winning the Mel Brodt Collegiate Open. Her time was 37 seconds faster than any BGSU student-athlete ran the 5,000-meter race a year ago and was 17 seconds faster than any other competitor at the meet.
At the Spartan Invitational she placed third out of 318 runners. The competition was fierce with top teams and runners from last season. She finished behind two Michigan State runners, one of whom was fourth in the nation a year ago and the other was just short of All-American status last season. She earned Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week honors for her performance at the invitational.
Next up for the Falcons was the Paul Short Run. Walny who was just heating up and placed sixth with a time of 20:36. She shaved 50 seconds off of her previous personal best set at the Spartan Invitational. Walny trailed the top runner by just nine seconds.
Before heading to the MAC Championships, Walny would go against all regionally-ranked teams at Pre-Nationals. She finished first for the Falcons and 20th overall. Walny was the top finisher among Mid-American Conference racers, defeating top runners from Western and Eastern Michigan.Â
