Bowling Green, Ohio – With just days until the 2015-16 Falcons' regular season opener versus New Orleans, head coach Michael Huger and the men's basketball program are excited to announce the signing of Dylan Frye (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Mater Academy) and Rodrick Caldwell (Dayton, Ohio/Wayne H.S.) to National Letters of Intent to continue both their academic and athletic careers at Bowling Green State University in 2016.
"I would like to welcome Dylan Frye and Rodrick Caldwell to our Falcon family," stated Coach Huger. "I think both of them will have wonderful careers here at BGSU. Go Falcons!"
A 6-2, 170 pound guard, Frye comes to BGSU from Pembroke Pines, Fla. where he has played at Hialeah Gardens High School, Mater Academy Charter High School and Miami Christian High School over the last three years. Playing his senior season back at Mater Academy this year, Frye will look to finish out his high school career as a two-time state champion and a four-time district champion.
As a junior in 2014-15, Frye led his Miami Christian team to a 25-4 overall record, a district championship title and a Class 2A 2015 Men's Basketball State Championship title with a 71-44 win over Agape Christian Academy in the championship game. It was the school's first state championship since 2002.
As a sophomore at Mater Academy, he led the Lions to a 21-5 overall record and a spot in the regional semifinals in 2013-14, after guiding Hialeah Gardens to the regional finals and a 23-6 overall record in 2012-13 as a freshman.
The three-time district champion was named to the Miami-Dade All-County Team in both 2014 as a sophomore and in 2015 as a junior. The three-time team captain is also a member of the Nike South Beach AAU team.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to coach Dylan. I think he is a perfect fit for our program and our style of play. Dylan is a high IQ type of player that is good in the open court as well as in the half court," Coach Huger commented. "He is very fast with the ball and is great at making his teammates better. Dylan will bring leadership to our program right away."
A 5-10, 165 pound guard, Caldwell heads to Bowling Green from Dayton, Ohio where he has spent the last two years at Wayne High School after playing two seasons at Stivers High School as freshman and sophomore.
Last year as a junior, Caldwell led the Wayne H.S. Warriors to a 29-4 overall record and a perfect 9-0 conference record en route to an Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I State Championship title with a 65-57 win over Westerville South in the championship game. The Warriors were ranked No. 1 in the state of Ohio and reached as high as No. 24 nationally. Tabbed the Most Valuable Player at the state tournament and selected to the Flyin' to the Hoop All-Tournament Team, Caldwell averaged 10.4 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game his junior season.
In his two years at Stivers School for the Arts, Caldwell led his team to 22 wins overall and helped his squad improve from eight wins his freshman season in 2012-13 to 14 wins in 2013-14 as a sophomore. In his freshman season, he averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.0 rebounds, and then improved his numbers as a sophomore with 16.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per contest.
A two-time team captain, Caldwell is a member of the All-Ohio Red AAU team and also played for the Cincinnati Lakers AAU program. In fact, when he was in sixth grade, Caldwell was a member of the Cincinnati Lakers team that placed sixth in the country overall. His team won four AAU State Championship Tournaments. His All-Ohio Red team has won numerous tournaments including the 2014 Spiece Run-N-Slam Tournament and the 2014 NY2LA Swish N Dish Tournament.
"I'm excited to have the chance to coach Rodrick. He is also a perfect fit for our program because Rodrick is very good at using the pick and roll," continued Huger. "He is a very good defender on and off the ball. He will also bring leadership to our program as well."
BGSU will tip-off its 2015-16 season this Saturday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. ET versus New Orleans at the Stroh Center. The Falcons will then host the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in the second annual Bill Frack Challenge.
