Athens, Ohio – Senior forward Richaun Holmes eclipsed the 1,000 career-point mark early in the second half, as the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team flew past the Ohio Bobcats in a 76-65 road win at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio on Tuesday night.
Holmes becomes only the 42nd player in the 100 years of BGSU men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points. The 6-8 forward also became just the 12th player in BGSU history since 1953-54 to record 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds, and is the only Falcon in BGSU history to post 1,000 career points, 600 career rebounds and 200 career blocks.
Junior forward Spencer Parker led the Falcons with his first career double-double with 19 points, matching his season-high, and 10 rebounds, while Jehvon Clarke made the best of his first start of the season with 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Holmes registered 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals, while guard Anthony Henderson chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Ohio had three players in double figures led by Maurice Ndour's game-high 24 points and seven rebounds. Antonio Campbell posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, while off the bench Stevie Taylor added 12 points, five assists and three steals.
"I was curious, as was the next guy, how our team would respond after the rough week we had at home, coming off two losses. We've done a lot of talking the last couple of days. Certainly we've practiced and prepared like we normally do, but we've talked a lot about approach, we've talked a lot about aggressiveness and we've talked a lot about how we need to play to be successful," continued Coach Jans. "We felt like at times last week we got away from that and we needed to regroup, kind of reset, on both ends of the floor. But I couldn't be more proud of their response with their backs against the wall a little bit. They came out punching like we wanted them to."
The game opened up with a furious offensive pace on both ends of the floor, as Ohio took a 10-7 lead into the first media timeout of the game at the 15:16 mark.
The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth four more times over the next three minutes of play until a driving left-handed scoop layup from Jovan Austin at the 11:59 mark sparked a 16-2 run for the Falcons who soared out to a 29-16 lead on a steal and dunk from Henderson with 6:30 to go in the opening half.
During that stretch, the Falcons held Ohio without a point for 4:45 until a three-pointer by Ndour at the six minute mark put the BGSU back down to 10 at 29-19.
Ohio would get another three-pointer from Campbell two minutes later, yet nothing could slow down the Falcons' offense, as BGSU scored 11 more points over the final five minutes of the half, including the final eight points, to take a 40-22 lead into the halftime break.
A two-handed dunk by Holmes started the scoring in the second half, as back-to-back baskets by the senior pushed the Falcons' lead out to 22 points at 44-22 with 18:21 to go in the game.
Ndour and Campbell combined to score 10 of the Bobcats' next 13 points, as Ohio cut the BGSU lead to 14 at 49-35, before a jumper from the right wing from Josh Gomez pushed the Falcons lead back out to 16 with 13:33 left to play.
Following an Ohio offensive rebound and put back basket, BGSU answered with an 11-2 spurt to fly out to a game-high 23-point lead at 62-39 on back-to-back three-pointers from Parker with 9:27 to go in regulation.
However, the game was far from over, as Ohio used a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to get back to within 14 points at 62-48 on an old-fashion three-point play from Taylor.
The Bobcats would get to within 10 points at 70-60 on a steal and slam from Treg Setty at the 2:49 mark, yet the Falcons did not panic, but rather went a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line over the final minute of play to hold on for the 76-65 road win.
Bowling Green out-rebounded the Bobcats 45-31 for the game and outscored Ohio 42-26 in points in the paint. BGSU also totaled 21 points in second chance points on 18 offensive rebounds.
The Falcons shot 29-of-65 (44.6 percent) for the game, yet continued to struggle from long range going only 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) overall.
BGSU (18-8, 10-5 MAC) will remain on the road, where it has won four straight contests, to take on Miami on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 3:30 p.m. at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio.
