BGSU scores 17 runs in wins over IPFW, Wright State
Both games were part of final-day action at the Indiana University Hoosier Classic at Andy Mohr Field.
Sophomore Aspen Searle and junior Molly Holliday combined for nine hits on Sunday. Searle, who was 4-for-7 in the two games, homered twice and drove in four runs in the win over IPFW. She scored four runs in Sunday's two games.
Holliday was 5-for-8 at the plate, including a three-hit contest vs. Wright State, and scored three runs on Sunday.
"It feels great to finish the road trip with two wins," said BGSU head coach Shannon Salsburg. "The kids really fought through some adversity early in this trip, and while we didn't see the results we wanted, we continued to play better. Today we put together a strong offensive showing and found ways to get outs.
"I am proud of the grit of this team. What we learned this week about ourselves will pay off during the tough MAC season."
The Falcons (7-12) had baserunners early and often in Sunday's first game. BGSU had nine hits against IPFW pitching, and BG batters also drew 11 walks and were hit by a pitch on two occasions.
BGSU's top-three hitters in the batting order – Searle, Holliday and junior Marina Cobbs – combined to go 6-for-10 against the Mastodons, as each member of that trio pounded out a pair of hits. In fact, every member of the Falcons' starting lineup reached base at least once in the game, with eight of the nine players getting on base two or more times in the win.
The Falcons seized control of the IPFW game early, with six runs in the top of the first inning. BG had four hits and drew four walks in that half-inning. For the fourth-straight game, Searle began a contest by reaching base, as she drew a base on balls against IPFW starter Sarah Lazarowich. Searle stole second and took third when Holliday's infield hit put runners at the corners.
Searle was cut down on a double-steal attempt, but Cobbs hit a ball to the right-field fence for an RBI triple, as Holliday scored easily. Sophomore Trista Mokienko drew a walk, and pinch-runner Amanda Durham and Cobbs successfully executed a double steal, with Cobbs scoring for a 2-0 BGSU lead. Soph Haley Schrock continued her hot hitting, lacing a single to left-center to plate Durham.
Then, senior Chloe Giordano drew a walk, and freshman Morgan Evangelista was hit by a pitch to load the bases. When Lazarowich walked freshman Kayla Koch, Schrock trotted home, and the Falcons had a four-run lead. Senior Emily McClelland made it a six-run advantage as she ripped a double to right-center, scoring both Evangelista and Giordano.
In all, the Falcons sent 11 hitters to the plate in that first half-inning, and it took Lazarowich 55 pitches to get the required three outs.
The Mastodons got on the scoreboard with an unearned run off junior Braiden Dillow in the bottom of the inning, as Jenna Balthazor reached on an error, took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Morghyn Neal.
IPFW scored again in the bottom of the second on a leadoff homer by Avery Nelson. After a walk to the next batter, senior Jamie Kertes entered the game for the Falcons. A sac bunt resulted in the first out, but the baserunner was then erased on a fielder's choice, and Kertes got the next IPFW hitter to sky a lazy fly ball to left to end the inning.
BG exploded for four more runs in the third inning, with the first three coming courtesy of the long ball. Evangelista deposited the first pitch of the inning over the left-field wall for her first collegiate homerun, and the Falcons had a 7-2 lead. Koch walked and took second on a passed ball, and one out later, Searle clubbed a two-run homer to left that chased Lazarowich.
Kaitlin Kowalski entered the game, and got a groundout on her first pitch, but she then walked the next four batters, and threw 12 balls in one 13-pitch span. Kowalski issued free passes to Cobbs, Mokienko and Schrock, and then threw a wild pitch that allowed Cobbs to score. Another walk actually wound up ending the inning, as on a ball-four pitch to Giordano, Mokienko was tagged out attempting to score after the pitch initially got away from the IPFW catcher.
In the fourth inning, Searle's second two-run homer of the game plated pinch-runner Kayla Gregory and gave the Falcons a 12-3 lead. Searle now has four homers this season after hitting three during all of the 2014 campaign.
Kertes worked a one-two-three fourth inning, but the 'Dons looked to keep the game alive in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back singles put a pair of runners aboard with one out, and Caitlyn DeLong's double scored Emily Olszewski to make it a 12-4 game. But, Kertes got Kelly Pevely to swing and miss for a strikeout, then fanned Nelson to end the inning and the game.
Kertes picked up the win in relief, allowing two runs (just one earned) and three hits in four innings. She walked one batter and struck out four. Lazarowich, one of three IPFW hurlers, took the loss, surrendering 10 runs and nine hits in three-and-a-third innings of work. The three IPFW pitchers combined to walk 10 batters and strike out just one.
BG again jumped on top early against Wright State, with two runs in the first inning and three more in the second. For the fifth consecutive game, Searle led off the first inning by reaching base, with a single to left against WSU starter Ashley Sharp. Holliday followed with a single, and Mokienko's one-out single loaded the bases before the Falcons' fourth hit of the inning, off the bat of Schrock, plated both Searle and Holliday.
Sophomore Briana Combs started the game in the circle for the Brown and Orange, and allowed only a one-out single in the bottom of the first. The BG bats were back at it in the second.
Koch drew a leadoff walk, and Searle singled to right – her second hit of the game and fourth of the day – to move pinch-runner Durham to second. Holliday singled, and went all the way to third base on an error by the WSU centerfielder as Searle and Durham scored easily. Then, Cobbs' second triple in as many games scored Holliday and prompted a pitching change for the Raiders.
WSU got on the scoreboard in the fourth, as Libby Pfeffer led off with an infield hit, and Hanna Floyd was hit by a Combs pitch. Combs proceeded to strike out Reagan Stofcheck, but another HBP loaded the bases with just one out. A grounder to Giordano at third base resulted in a force at the plate, and Combs struck out Angie Clark for what appeared to be the third out, but Clark reached base on a passed ball, with Floyd coming home to make it a 5-1 game. With the bases still loaded, Combs got Kortney Tackett to hit an inning-ending grounder back to the circle.
In the fifth inning, WSU's Jess Gorman singled with one out, and Libby Pfeffer's second in in as many innings was a double to left that moved Gorman to third. Floyd greeted reliever Kertes with a single up the middle, and suddenly, it was a 5-3 game. But, the BG senior threw a third strike past Stofcheck, and Sharp popped up to second base to end the inning.
Clark singled with one out in the sixth, bringing the tying run to the plate for the Raiders, but Kertes struck out Tackett for the second out. A walk to Macey Gunther, however, put the potential tying run on first and brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but the BG senior pitcher induced Gorman to hit a harmless grounder to McClelland at second base, for the third out.
WSU reliever Montana Wear, after entering the game with one out in the second, shut down the Falcon bats for the most part. In the seventh inning, Holliday's bunt single gave the Falcons a one-out baserunner, but Wear got a pair of fly-ball outs to end the half-inning. Wear allowed just two hits in her five-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
In the bottom of the seventh, Libby Pfeffer led off with a single to center, her third hit of the game. Floyd struck out looking, but Stofcheck's single up the middle put two runners on base with just one out. Kertes got Sharp to pop up to Koch at first base, but a Becka Peterson single up the middle loaded the bases.
Combs reentered the game, with the bases loaded and two outs. She faced Clark, and got her to ground out to end the game.
Combs earned her first win, allowing three runs (two earned) in four-and-two-thirds innings in the circle against the Raiders. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
In addition to the nine combined hits by Searle and Holliday on Sunday, Cobbs and Schrock had three hits apiece. Cobbs, who had a triple in each of Sunday's games, went 3-for-7 at the plate, with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI.
Schrock was 3-for-5 on Sunday, scoring a run and driving in three.
In the Falcons' five games in Bloomington (BG played a single game vs. Indiana on Thursday before the IU Hoosier Classic began), Searle batted .625 with a slugging percentage of 1.125. She was 10-for-16 at the plate with two doubles, two homers, six runs scored and five RBI.
Schrock hit .500 and Cobbs batted .412 in the five games at IU, with Holliday hitting .375.
The Falcons' next action comes Wednesday (March 18), when BGSU travels to Ann Arbor to face the University of Michigan. The Wolverines, ranked third in the nation, will enter the game with a record of 24-4. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Wilpon Softball Complex.
