CLEVELAND, Ohio – Two members of the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team – junior Alyssa Nocella and freshman Laura Mitchell – were tabbed as All-MAC performers, the league office announced Wednesday morning. Nocella earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team for the second consecutive season, while Mitchell's freshman campaign solidified her a position on the All-MAC Second Team.
Nocella – a junior from Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania – took home six all-around titles this season, and notched 10 other top-three finishes. In total, Nocella posted 13 scores at, or above the 9.800 plateau. Nocella was named MAC Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 9 for her performances against Ohio State and Ball State. Against the Cardinals, Nocella scored career highs on the all-around (39.350) and on floor (9.925). Her floor score ranks fifth all-time in program history, while her all-around score ranks third best in BGSU gymnastics history. Nocella is the only Falcon to generate an all-around score in every meet this year. A total of six student-athletes earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team.
Mitchell – a freshman from London, England, and a member of the eight-member All-MAC Second Team – has earned four first-place finishes, and three second-place finishes this season. Mitchell won an event across the first four competitions of her career. In her collegiate debut, she won beam by scoring a 9.850 at Eastern Michigan. The following week, she scored a career-high 9.875 at George Washington to win beam again. After winning beam over the first two meets, she then won bars in Bowling Green's next two competitions. Mitchell scored a 9.825 against Ohio State, and then a career-best 9.850 versus Ball State two days later. Mitchell notched second-place finishes at Northern Illinois (9.825 on beam), at Central Michigan (9.850 on beam), and versus Ohio State (9.825 on beam).
Bowling Green will compete at the MAC Championships this Saturday, March 14, at 4 p.m. on the campus of Kent State University. The Falcons enter the competition as one of just nine schools fighting for the last six spots at NCAA Regionals.
