Richaun Holmes Invited to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

Portsmouth, Va. – Bowling Green State University forward Richaun Holmes is one of 64 college basketball seniors to be invited to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament to be held on April 8-11 in Portsmouth, Va.

The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament has been held since 1953 and each year invites top college basketball seniors from across the country to participate in the four-day, 12-game tournament, in front of representatives from every NBA organization.

"I am thrilled that Richaun was invited to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. It is a huge honor for him," stated BGSU head coach Chris Jans. "It speaks volumes as to the improvement and growth he has made not only this past season, but during his time at BGSU."

The 6-8 forward has etched his named in the BGSU men's basketball record books, as he is the only Falcon in the program's 100-year history to score 1,000 career points, grab 600 career rebounds and sway away 200 career blocks while at BGSU.

Holmes finished his three-year career at Bowling Green as the Falcons' career blocks leader with 244 career rejections and ranks seventh all-time on BGSU's career field goal percentage list with a career shooting average of 55.4 percent overall. The Lockport, Illinois native also ranks 11th all-time in career rebounds with 652 boards and is 35th all-time on BGSU's career scoring list with 1,089 career points.

"It's a great honor to be selected to the Portsmouth Invitational. I know that only a select few players get picked to participate in it," commented Holmes. "I'm honored to even be looked at. It is just another opportunity for me to try to prove myself and to continue to play basketball."

Tabbed the 2014-15 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, the six-time MAC East Division Men's Basketball Player of the Week, was also named to the 2014-15 All-MAC First-Team, the 2013-14 All-MAC Third-Team, the 2013-14 College Sports Madness All-Conference Third-Team and was a 2013-14 CollegeHoopsDaily.com MAC All-Conference selection.

This past season Holmes led the Falcons in scoring (14.7 points), rebounding (8.0 rebounds), blocks (83 blocks), field goal percentage (56.3 percent) and minutes played (28.8 per game). He also led the MAC in ranked in the top-25 nationally in field goal percentage (56.3 percent), blocked shots per game (2.7) and in total blocks (83).

Holmes currently holds the BGSU season record in blocked shots with 88 in 2013-14, while also holding the second and third-place spots on that list as well with 83 blocks in 2014-15 and 73 blocks in 2012-13.

Mission of the P.I.T.
The P.I.T. has always claimed to be "more than a basketball tournament". Each year the P.I.T. contributes back to the community by awarding five $4,000 scholarships to student athletes from Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach. In addition to the scholarships, approximately $11,500 from the tournament proceeds is presented to local non-profit organizations and charities to help them make a difference in the local community, creating a grand total of over $31,500 given back the community each year. The contributions and scholarships have risen significantly over the years thanks to the support of local sponsors, advertisers, ticket sales, the City of Portsmouth and the NBA. Of course, the more than 100 volunteers involved in producing the tournament have a special place in the success of this wonderful event each year.
