Falcons Fall In Game Two Of Series, 9-4
March 07, 2015 | Baseball
BUIES CREEK, N.C.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost to Campbell University on Saturday afternoon in game two of the three-game weekend series, 9-4. The game was played at Jim Perry Stadium. With the win, Campbell improves to 12-2 on the season and extends their winning streak to nine games. Bowling Green drops to 3-5 with the loss.
"For the second straight day we did not put all three phases together in a game," head coach Danny Schmitz began. " Good teams like Campbell are going to take advantage of mistakes and beat you, and that's exactly what happened today."
For the second consecutive game both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings, as Trevor Blaylock dueled Campbell's Nick Thayer on the mound. Bowling Green's defense early on was a big key to holding the Camels' offense scoreless in the first three frames.
In the bottom of the second, Campbell got their first two runners on base with singles—the second coming on a high infield chopper to Cody Callaway at third base. Campbell's sacrifice bunt attempt proved unsuccessful to the very next hitter, as the Falcons' defense perfectly executed a wheel play to retire the lead runner at third base for the first out of the inning. Bowling Green was not out of the woods yet, however, as CU still had runners on first and second with just one out. But, during the next at-bat, Trey Keegan picked off the lead runner, throwing behind him to Brandon Howard at second for the second out of the inning. With two outs, Keegan then gunned out a would-be base stealer for the final out of the inning, as the Falcons escaped the two-on, nobody-out jam with no harm
Campbell threatened again in the bottom of the third, as they found themselves in business following a one-out double down the left field line. Once again, Keegan came up big, picking off his second runner in as many innings to end the threat. On the play, Keegan used a big pump fake, which drew the Campbell runner towards third. Once he was caught between bases, Keegan threw to shortstop Nick Glanzman who was able to apply the tag.
The bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference in Saturday's ballgame, as Campbell got five runs in the inning to take command of the game. Dangerous leadoff hitter Cedric Mullins began the inning with a single to center field, and quickly moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A groundout to short allowed Mullins to move to third, and two batters later he came home on a sacrifice fly to left field.
With Campbell leading just 1-0 with a runner on first, the Falcons were just one out away from getting out of the inning and limiting the damage. Campbell got aggressive on the base paths to produce another run in the inning, stealing second base before a single up the middle gave them a 2-0 lead.
CU's Cole Hallum would deliver a dagger in the very next at-bat, hitting a two-run home run over the wall in left field to give the Camels a 4-0 lead. They were still not done, however, as JD Andreessen singled following the Hallum home run, and then scored on a double into the left-center field gap for a 5-0 lead.
Campbell extended their lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Mullins tripled to begin the inning and scampered home on an errant relay throw.
Trailing 6-0 entering the top of the sixth, the Falcons' offense came to life in the inning. Thayer, the Campbell starter, entered the day having allowed just one earned run in 19.0 innings pitched (0.47 ERA) on the season. However, the Falcons were able to get to him for three runs in the top of the sixth, cutting the deficit in half and ending his day after six innings pitched.
Glanzman started things off in the sixth with a line drive single over the second baseman's head. That was followed by a Howard single up the middle. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, and one batter later, Glanzman crossed home plate thanks to another wild pitch.
Following a walk to Keegan, Bowling Green had runners on the corners with just one out for cleanup batter Randy Righter. Righter was able to find green grass with a single into left field, cutting Bowling Green's deficit to just four runs, at 6-2. A Matt Smith single made it 6-3, as Keegan scored on the play. Although that would be all the Falcons would get in the inning, Bowling Green was positioned for a late inning rally.
However, Campbell had different thoughts on Saturday afternoon, as the Camels scored one run in each of their last three at bats, extending the lead out to a 9-4 score.
Bowling Green's fourth run of the game came in the top of the eighth, as Brown recorded a leadoff single and eventually came around to score on two defensive errors by the Camels.
Bowling Green managed nine hits in the game, including Hunter Clanin's second-inning single to left field. That single, in just his second career at-bat, was the first of Clanin's career.
The two teams will wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch expected at 1:00 p.m. ET. Freshman Zac Carey will get the start for the Falcons on the mound.
