Falcon senior earns all-conference honorable mention
Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Deborah Hoekstra has been recognized for her season-long accomplishments by the Mid-American Conference coaches. Hoekstra was named to the All-MAC Team, which was announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon (March 9).
Hoekstra, a native of East Lansing, Mich. (East Lansing), earned honorable mention accolades. She leads the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding, with 11.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, and has hit a team-leading 50 three-point field goals this season to date.
In MAC games, Hoekstra posted team-best averages of 12.2 ppg and 8.8 rpg. Hoekstra – a guard – tied for fourth in the MAC in rebounding in conference games. She has led the team or tied for the team lead in rebounding in nine of the last 13 games.
Additionally, Hoekstra leads the MAC and ranks tenth in the nation in free-throw percentage, hitting shots from the stripe at a rate of 89.5 percent. She has had a BG-best seven double-doubles this season, with all seven coming in MAC play. Hoekstra has had double-doubles in each of the last three games, including in Saturday's (March 7) Senior Day game at the Stroh Center, when she scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high 15 boards vs. Akron.
Hoekstra had totals of 326 points and 118 rebounds through her first three seasons at BGSU, making a total of 54 three-pointers in that time. This season, she has 335 points and 200 rebounds, along with those 50 successful treys.
Off the court, Hoekstra was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team last month, the Falcons' first such honoree in four years. She has provided on- and off-the-court leadership to a young BGSU squad which has been ravaged by injuries.
Hoekstra and the Falcons open MAC Tournament play on Monday evening (March 9), facing Western Michigan University in first-round action. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at WMU's University Arena.
