State College, Pennsylvania – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team had a tale of two rounds on Saturday, as the Falcons posted a first round score of 294 in the morning session, yet struggled in the second round with a score of 304 to end day one in seventh-place overall at the 2015 Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State University in State College, Pa.
With their first round team score of 294, +10, the Falcons headed into the second round of play in a tie for second-place overall. However, as a team, BGSU struggled over the second set of 18 holes to card a score of 304, +20, and end day one with a two-round score of 598, +30.
The Falcons will head into the final day of play on Sunday in seventh-place overall out of the 12 team field and only 13 strokes out of the top-three spots on the team leaderboard.
"The guys got off to a great start today through the first 15 holes then let their bad finish in the first round bring negative vibes to the second round, which was the worst round of the year by far with no competitive drive and no thinking," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "If we play like that at the MAC's we will not finish as high as we would like or are capable of doing."
A trio of Falcons in Jose Narro, Joe Cooper and Brett Rinker all concluded day one inside the top-20.
Narro bounced back from a first round 76, +5, to shoot a second round 72, +1, to finish Saturday in a tie for 15th-place overall with a two-round combined score of 148, +6.
Cooper carded a BGSU low round 70, -1 under par, over the first round of play, yet couldn't carry over the momentum into the second round where he turned in an 18-hole score of 79, +8, to end day one in a tie for 18th-place overall with a 36-hole score of 149, +7.
Tied with Cooper in 18th-place is Rinker, as the sophomore and Pennsylvania native posted rounds of 73, +2, and 76, +5, en route to his first day score of 149, +7.
BGSU senior Ryan Triller recorded rounds of 75, +4, and 77, +6, to finish with a 36-hole score of 152, +10, while freshman Cameron Michalak posted scores of 82, +11, and 80, +9, for a combined two-round score of 162, +20. Triller and Michalak will enter the third and final round of play on Sunday in 34th and 71st-place, respectively.
Host Penn State leads after day one of play, as the Nittany Lions turned in a tournament low round 276, -8 under par, over the second round of play to end day one in first-place overall with a two-round combined team score of 572, +4.
Eastern Michigan (579, +11) and Rutgers (585, +17) round out the top-three on the team leaderboard, sitting in second and third-place, respectively.
