Five Falcons Named to Academic All-MAC Team
April 20, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Fullenkamp, Hoekstra, Justinger, Kirkpatrick & Konieczki all earn the league honor
A total of five Bowling Green State University women's basketball student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Seniors Erica Fullenkamp and Deborah Hoekstra, junior Miriam Justinger, sophomore Rachel Konieczki and redshirt freshman Kennedy Kirkpatrick made the team, which was announced Tuesday (April 20) by the conference office.
BGSU's five selections were the most of any MAC institution. In addition, BGSU had two of the three total student-athletes -- Fullenkamp and Hoekstra -- with a 4.000 cumulative grade-point average. A total of 29 student-athletes were chosen to the team.
Fullenkamp, who hails from Minster, Ohio (Minster H.S.) earns Academic All-MAC Team honors for the second time in 2014-15. She joined the women's basketball team on Jan. 8, 2015, after a successful four-year career on the BGSU volleyball team. She did not see action in the first game after she joined the team, but played in each of the final 16 contests. Fullenkamp, who made her BGSU hoops debut against Northern Illinois at the Stroh Center on Jan. 14, averaged 0.3 points and 1.1 rebounds in 6.9 minutes per game. A two-time Academic All-MAC selection in volleyball, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Second Team and also was named a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete in that sport, in the first year of that award's existence. Fullenkamp helped the volleyball Falcons to a MAC Tournament title and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Championships during her sophomore year of 2012.
Hoekstra, a native of East Lansing, Mich. (East Lansing H.S.), played in all 30 games in 2014-15, starting the last 24. An honorable-mention selection to the All-MAC Team, she led the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding, with 11.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest. She made a team-high 51 three-point field goals, and she led the MAC and ranked ninth in the entire nation in free-throw percentage, shooting 90.1 percent from the stripe. Hoekstra averaged 12.2 ppg and 8.8 rpg in MAC games only, tying for 12th in the league in scoring and fourth in rebounding. She was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team, BGSU's first such honoree in four years. Hoekstra made a total of 105 three-point field goals in her career, including 92 over her final two seasons. She scored 589 points in those two years, en route to 672 total points as a Falcon.
Justinger, from Sylvania, Ohio (Northview H.S.), was one of just two players to start all 30 games in 2014-15. She was second on the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 10.3 points and 5.3 boards per contest. She averaged a team-high 2.1 assists per outing, and also paced the Brown and Orange in minutes played, with 32.5 per game, and steals, with 1.2 per contest. Justinger has career totals of 781 points, 346 rebounds, 201 assists and 101 steals in her first three years with the Falcons.
Kirkpatrick, a native of Lawrence, Kansas (Free State H.S.), played in 29 of BG's 30 games in '14-15, starting the final five contests of the year. She averaged 5.1 points and 1.5 rebounds per game, Kirkpatrick had a pair of double-digit scoring games on the year, including in the Falcons' win over Miami. In that game, she exploded for 18 points, more than double her previous career-best scoring effort. Kirkpatrick had 13 first-half points, singlehandedly outscoring the RedHawks as the Falcons took a 31-9 halftime lead. Kirkpatrick played at least 20 minutes in 15 of the 18 MAC regular-season contests, including three games of 30 or more minutes.
Konieczki, from Rockford, Ill. (Rockford Lutheran), started all 30 games on the year. She averaged 5.6 points per game, good for fourth on the team, along with 1.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Konieczki, who finished second on the team in steals, had a then career-high 11 points in the season opener vs. Bucknell, then scored 15 points -- all in the second half -- in BG's come-from-behind win at Milwaukee. In that game, she scored 10 points in the final 7:06, including eight in a three-minute span. Konieczki scored in double figures on five occasions, with eight or more points in seven additional games.
The Academic All-MAC Team honor is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
