Program-High Five Gymnasts Named Academic All-MAC
April 22, 2015 | Gymnastics
Five Falcons – all of which are scheduled to return next season – were named Academic All-MAC this afternoon.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Bowling Green State University gymnasts Katrina Carpenter, Caroline Ellingboe, Lauren Feely, Alyssa Nocella and Rachel Reis were tabbed as Academic All-MAC student-athletes today, in voting by the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The five student-athletes being named Academic All-MAC establishes a new school record, as the gymnastics program has never had more than two representatives on the Academic All-MAC team across a single season.
"The Academic All-MAC award is such a tribute to the work and dedication that these student-athletes experience," head coach Kerrie Turner said. "I am so proud and appreciative of the success that Katrina, Caroline, Lauren, Alyssa and Rachel have achieved. Our program has promoted excellence as a practice in all realms of life. Clearly, these five gymnasts and our team have accepted this challenge and flourished."
Nocella (3.797, Pre-Exercise Science) was named to the team last year, while Carpenter (3.440, Early Childhood Education), Ellingboe (3.664, Graphic Design), Feely (4.000, Early Childhood Education) and Reis (4.000, Pre-Exercise Science) have been awarded the honor for the first times in their respective careers. Equally as impressive, all five student-athletes are scheduled to return to the program next season.
The Academic All-MAC honor is given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
The Orange and Brown finished the 2015 season with an 8-8 record, marking the first time since 2002 that the program finished with at least an even record. Three team scores posted throughout the season (195.700 vs. Kent State; 195.500 vs. Ball State; 195.250 at Michigan State) rank inside of the top 10 in school history, while a pair of 195.200 scores – that were scored versus Ohio State and at Northern Illinois – sit in the No. 11 slot. The 195.700 ranks sixth best, while the 195.500 ranks ninth best, and the 195.250 ranks 10th best.
