AVON, Ohio—Four members of the Bowling Green State University baseball team were honored by the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday night with postseason honors at the annual awards ceremony on the night before the MAC Tournament begins Wednesday at All Pro Freight Stadium.
Freshman Zac Carey took home the Falcons' highest honor of the night, as he was named the MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year. He was also named second team All-MAC as a starting pitcher. Trey Keegan was the other Falcon to take home multiple honors, earning first team All-MAC at catcher and also earning All-MAC Defensive honors behind the dish. Two other Falcons—Matt Smith (outfield) and Brandon Howard (at-large)—were named second team All-MAC.
Carey, a native of London, Ohio, took home MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year honors after compiling a 6-0 record during league play. He is the first pitcher at Bowling Green to be honored as a MAC Pitcher of the Year since Brennan Smith took home honors in 2009. A true freshman, Carey compiled a 2.40 earned run average in 56.1 IP during MAC play. He tied for the MAC lead with six wins during conference action and was the only starting pitcher who started all nine weeks to go undefeated. He was also recognized as a second team All-MAC honoree amongst starting pitchers.
Keegan, a native of Sandusky, Ohio, earned first team All-MAC honors at catcher after batting .309 with an on-base percentage of .412. His 43 runs scored were seventh in the conference and his .475 caught stealing percentage is amongst the best in the nation. The Falcons' catcher led the team with 38 RBI on the season, good for 10th-best in the MAC. His power in the middle of the Bowling Green lineup proved to be of value, as his 12 doubles and five home runs also led the Orange and Brown. Keegan's recognition marks the second consecutive year in which a Falcon catcher earns first team honors, after T.J. Losby took home the honor last season. The redshirt sophomore was also named as the catcher on the All-MAC Defensive Team, as he picked off four runners to just three errors this season. His 40 stolen base attempts against were amongst the fewest in the entire nation, and his five passed balls ranked among the lowest in the MAC.
Smith, a native of Johnstown, Ohio, earns second team All-MAC honors for the first time in his career. The junior left fielder led the Mid-American Conference with a .398 batting average in 27 league games this season. An all-around player, Smith had 36 RBI and scored 31 runs. His .439 on-base percentage and .534 MAC slugging percentage both ranked inside the league's top 10. He finished MAC play with 41 hits and 23 RBI.
Howard, a redshirt senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, earns second team All-MAC honors for the first time in his career. Howard, who saved his best season for his last season, set the school's single-season record with 39 stolen bases in the regular season to rank second in the MAC. Overall, Howard finished with a .293 batting average, but a .423 on-base percentage. Howard scored 49 runs this season to lead the Falcons, finishing fifth in the MAC in the category. The Falcons' second baseman also led the team with 35 walks this season, good for second-most in the conference.
