Velasquez Wins Hammer Throw At Toledo Invite
May 07, 2015 | Women's Track and Field
Toledo, Ohio – Redshirt sophomore Kayla Velasquez won the hammer throw at the Toledo Invitational Thursday evening, recording a personal best performance in the process.
Only Velasquez and fellow redshirt sophomore Kori Reiser competed during the first day of the meet, which begins the final weekend of competition before the Mid-American Conference Championships. Velasquez threw the hammer 182-feet-8.75, a distance that surpassed the personal best she threw just a week ago by more than eight inches. Reiser finished sixth with a toss of 169-1.5.
Both Velasquez and Reiser had already reached the MAC automatic qualifying mark of 175-8 earlier this year and both are ranked among the top eight in the conference in the event. In fact, along with Brooke Pleger, three of the top eight hammer throwers in the MAC are Falcons.
Bowling Green will complete the Toledo Invitational Friday as the Falcons are expected to compete 17 times over 11 events. The javelin kicks off the day's events at 9 am.
