Durham, Giordano, McClelland, Parave, Schrock, Searle & Shook all earn the league honor
A total of seven Bowling Green State University softball student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Seniors Chloe Giordano and Emily McClelland, junior Marisa Shook and sophomores Amanda Durham, Sami Parave, Haley Schrock and Aspen Searle all made the team, which was announced Tuesday afternoon (June 2) by the conference office.
McClelland was one of just three honorees with a perfect 4.000 cumulative grade-point average.
Durham, a native of Sayreville, N.J. (St. John Vianney), played in 31 games, making three starts, for the Falcons in 2015. Her two hits in 21 at-bats included a home run. Durham scored a total of eight runs on the year, and was a perfect 2-for-2 on stolen-base attempts. She made her first start of the season against Ohio (April 17), and certainly made the most of the opportunity. Durham lined a two-run homer to left field, breaking a scoreless tie, in the fourth inning of that BGSU win. She scored a total of three runs in BGSU's May 1 doubleheader at Eastern Michigan. In the classroom, Durham has a 3.530 cumulative GPA as a sport management major.
Giordano, who hails from White Plains, N.Y. (School of the Holy Child), was one of four Falcons to start all 48 games on the year. A 2015 team captain, she made 47 of those 48 starts at third base. Giordano hit .236, and was fourth on the Falcons in at-bats (140), hits (33) and runs batted in (17) in 2015. She tied for the team lead with 10 doubles after hitting a total of six in her first three seasons at BG. Giordano had a total of 12 extra-base hits, three more than her total for her first three years with the Falcons, and tied for fourth on the team with 48 total bases. She hit .258 in MAC games, and was third on the team with a .424 slugging pct. in conference contests. Giordano led the Falcons and ranked among the MAC leaders with eight doubles in league games. The senior had three hits -- all doubles -- in a doubleheader sweep of Toledo (March 29), and she exploded for five hits in a DH at Northern Illinois the next weekend (April 3), going 5-for-8 with three doubles and a three-run homer. That DH concluded a stretch in which she had six doubles in six games. Giordano, a health science major, has a cumulative GPA of 3.693.
McClelland, a native of Union Grove, Wis. (Union Grove H.S.), played in 36 games, and was in the starting lineup 23 times. She made 22 of those starts at second base, and hit .238 on the year, with a slugging percentage of .262 and an on-base pct. of .333. McClelland's 10 hits in 42 at-bats included a double, and she had eight runs scored and six RBI. She hit an impressive .455 (5-for-11) with runners in scoring position. McClelland earned her undergraduate degree in exercise science at BGSU, with a specialization in exercise programming. She had a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA, and also has a 4.00 GPA in graduate school through the Spring 2015 semester. McClelland is working toward a Master of Education degree in HMSL, with a kinesiology specialization.
Parave, from Mason, Ohio (William Mason H.S.), played in 24 games, making four starts. She started a pair of games in the outfield, and also made two starts as the Falcons' designated player. Parave had two hits in 18 at-bats on the season, with one of those hits coming on the road against nationally-ranked Notre Dame (April 15). She scored three runs on the season, and was perfect in four chances in the field. Parave, a psychology major at the University, has a cumulative GPA of 3.561.
Schrock, a native of Goshen, Ind. (Northridge H.S.), started 46 of BGSU's 48 games in left field. She hit .241, good for fourth on the team, with 28 hits in 116 at-bats. Schrock had a team-leading 22 walks -- tying for sixth in the MAC in that category -- and was second on the Falcons with a .380 on-base percentage. She was third on the team with 18 runs batted in, and also was third on the Falcons in multiple-RBI games, with five. Schrock scored 13 runs, the fourth-highest total on the Falcons, and hit .375 (12-of-32) with runners in scoring position. Schrock had back-to-back two-hit games in early March, including a 2-for-3 performance vs. Penn (March 10) in which she had a double, a homer, a walk, two runs and three RBI. That game began a season-best six-game hitting streak in which she batted .529 (9-for-17). Schrock was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, in March of 2015. An accounting major at BGSU, she has a stellar 3.949 cumulative GPA.
Searle, who hails from Brantford, Ontario (Bishop Tonnos), started all 48 games for the Falcons, making 27 starts at shortstop and 21 at second base. She finished second on the team in hitting, with a .344 batting average, and led the team in a plethora of categories, including at-bats (157), hits (54), home runs (nine), runs batted in (28), runs scored (35), total bases (97), on-base percentage (.395) and slugging pct. (.618). Searle tied for the team lead in both doubles and triples, with 10 doubles and three triples, and her total of 22 extra-base hits was 10 higher than any other Falcon. Searle ranked eighth in the MAC in slugging pct., and tied for eighth in the league in homers. She led BGSU in both multiple-hit games (16) and multi-RBI games (6 - tied for team lead), and reached base 40 times in 84 opportunities (.476) when leading off an inning. In MAC games, batted a team-best .365, and also led the Brown and Orange in at-bats (74), runs (12), hits (27), triples (two), homers (four), RBI (13), on-base pct. (.385) and slugging pct. (.622). She was twice named the MAC Player of the Week, and her numerous impressive games included eye-popping stat lines against IPFW (2-for-3 with two homers and four RBI), Canisius (three runs, three RBI and three stolen bases), Detroit (three runs scored including a walk-off homer in extra innings), Northern Illinois (4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI) and Eastern Michigan (2-for-3 with a triple, a homer and a BG season-best five RBI). In the classroom, Searle is a psychology major with a 3.537 cumulative GPA.
Shook, a native of Maumee, Ohio (Anthony Wayne H.S.), played in 29 games, making five starts, in 2015. She hit .171 with an on-base percentage of .256 during her junior year, scoring two runs and collecting one RBI. Shook had a pinch-hit RBI single against Detroit (March 31) at Meserve Field, and was 1-for-3 with a run scored against IPFW. A team captain in 2015, Shook was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma in March of 2015. A dietetics major at BGSU, Shook has a cumulative GPA of 3.806.
The Academic All-MAC Team honor is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
