Brooklyn, New York – Former Bowling Green State University men's basketball standout Richaun Holmes was selected at pick No. 37 by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2015 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft on Thursday night, June 25, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
"I'm just going to work hard and be a contributor to the team," commented Holmes. "I'm going to keep working and keep doing the things that got me here and even more so now. I'm going to continue to work hard to show people that I belong in the NBA."
By being chosen in this year's NBA Draft, Holmes becomes the first BGSU Falcon to be drafted since Antonio Daniels was picked fourth overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies (Memphis Grizzlies) back in the 1997 draft.
He also becomes the first NBA draft pick from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) since both Chris Kaman and Brandon Hunter were each selected in the 2003 NBA Draft. Kaman was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers as the sixth overall pick in out of Central Michigan, while Hunter went 56th overall to the Boston Celtics from Ohio.
Holmes, who competed at the invite only 2015 NBA Draft Combine in May, met with or worked out for 16 different NBA franchises over the last two months during the pre-draft workout sessions. The Lockport, Illinois native was named to the 2015 Portsmouth Invitational All-Tournament Team in April where he averaged 14.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 2.0 steals per game at the invite only event in front of numerous NBA scouts and coaches.
"The whole process has been really great. You know, just getting the opportunity to compete with different players in front of different teams. Sometimes I have actually even forgotten what city I am in because I've been flying around, working out and getting a chance to compete. It has been hectic, but it has definitely been fun," continued Holmes.
During his senior season at BGSU in 2014-15, Holmes was tabbed the MAC Defensive Player of the Year, earned a spot on the All-MAC First-Team and was named a 2014-15 NABC District 14 All-District First-Team selection. The 6-10 forward led the Falcons in scoring (14.7), rebounding (8.0), blocks (2.7) and minutes (28.8) per game, as well as in field goal percentage at 56.3 percent shooting on the year in which the Falcons went 21-12 overall and earned a postseason bid in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).
Bowling Green's all-time career blocks leader (244) and the only player in BGSU men's basketball history to post 1,000 career points, 600 career rebounds and 200 career blocks, Holmes becomes the 27th Falcon men's basketball player to be drafted by either the NBA or ABA in the program's history.
Holmes holds the BGSU single season blocks record with 88 blocks in 2013-14 and also ranks second (83, 2014-15) and third (73, 2012-13) in single season blocks in BGSU history. He ranks seventh all-time on BGSU's career field goal percentage list with a 55.4 career field goal percentage at BGSU, 11th all-time on BGSU's career rebounding list with 652 career rebounds and 35th all-time on BGSU's career scoring list with 1,089 career points.
