Former Falcons Flourish In Pro Baseball
June 05, 2015 | Baseball
The Bowling Green State University baseball program has a proud tradition of success, not only at the collegiate level but also at the professional level. Four former Falcons are active in professional baseball this season, while several others are involved as parts of professional coaching staffs.
Â
Burke Badenhop signed with the Cincinnati Reds during the offseason and has pitched in 17 games thus far. A native of Perrysburg, Ohio, Badenhop got off to a shaky start this season but has rebounded as of late. During his last seven games, Badenhop has pitched 9.1 innings while allowing just two earned runs. His WHIP (walks/hits per inning) ratio has also returned to form during that stretch, as he has a 1.18 mark during the last seven outings. As a team, the Reds are 23-29 on the season, in fourth-place in the National League Central.
Â
Nolan Reimold has played in 44 games this season for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles minor league system. After several seasons with the Orioles big league club, Reimold has been slowed the last two seasons by two neck injuries. This season, Reimold is hitting .280 with an on-base percentage of .344 and a slugging percentage of .381. He has 11 doubles and two home runs this season while scoring 22 runs. Norfolk is currently 30-23 on the season and tied for first in the International League's South Division.
Â
Jon Berti is currently on the 7-day disabled list for the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, a minor league affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Berti has played in 31 games this season, hitting .260 with 11 doubles. Berti, who was hit in the head with a pitch in the middle of May, has not played since May 17.
Â
Brennan Smith is currently a member of the Lakeland Flying Tigers (Single-A affiliate Detroit Tigers), and has also spent time this season at the Double-A level with the Erie SeaWolves. Smith has been strong with Lakeland, pitching in seven games with an ERA of 2.50. He has struck out 17 batters in 18.0 innings pitched.
Â
Bowling Green is also represented in professional baseball by Roger McDowell (pitching coach Atlanta Braves), Jeff Jones (pitching coach Detroit Tigers), Andy Tracy (minor league hitting coordinator Philadelphia Phillies) and Jim Joyce (MLB umpire).
