Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team held its first official fall practice yesterday afternoon inside of Anderson Arena.
The team began at 11 a.m. with a running warm-up, pre-conditioning and stretching before they broke off into their individual events. The vault group worked on basics and drills to improve their technique, while the uneven bar and balance beam groups focused on skills and parts of routines. The floor exercise group completed tumbling passes, dance throughs and endruance training. The coaching staff, led by head coach Kerrie Turner, was hands on and spent time focusing on details that will later be in the athletes' routines.
"We've had a good start with our unofficial practices," said Turner. "The conditioning in particular has been very challenging and I'm pleased with the progress of the team over the summer. They came in prepared and ready to go, so I feel like we're at a really good starting point."
The Orange and Brown graduated four seniors from last season, with Gina Locigno, Amanda Lievendag, Alexandria Porter and Jamilah Ali helping the Falcons to their best season since 2002. BGSU has nine returners and add eight newcomers to the team, led by seniors Alyssa Nocella and Caroline Ellingboe. Last season, Nocella was named First Team All-MAC for the second straight season, becoming the first Falcon to accomplish this feat since Marny Oestreng took home the honor across 1999-2001. She also became just the third BGSU gymnast across the last 15 years to qualify for three straight regionals.
Fellow returner Lauren Feely became the third Falcon in as many years to win at least a share of the MAC Vault Championship, as she scored a career-best 9.900 on the event. Feely was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
BGSU opened the 2014-15 season with the program's first win over a Big Ten Conference opponent since 2004 and went on to defeat Michigan State again to secure two wins over the Big Ten across one season for the first time since 2002. The Falcons were ranked No. 14 in the country according to GymInfo, which is the second best in program history. Another highlight from the season was when the Orange and Brown scored a season-best 195.700 to defeat Kent State for the first time in Bowling Green since 1999. Three team scores from the 2015 season (195.700 vs. Kent State, 195.500 vs. Ball State, 195.250 at MSU) rank inside of the top 10 in program history.
The Falcons will continue to hold fall practices until they begin their season in January of 2016.
