Bowling Green, Ohio – Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lauren Cadel recorded seven saves Sunday afternoon for the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, bumping her total to 53 on the season in the Falcons' 1-0 loss to Ball State at Cochrane Stadium.
"I thought we had some highs [in the game]," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "We didn't necessary have lows with mentality, but I thought we hit a point in the game where we lacked the belief that we could grind our way out of a one-hole deficit. We need to manage and control our controllables, and I think we somewhat let some of that slip away today."
Cadel's seven saves is her second highest of the 2015 campaign. Her 19 saves on Sept. 13 against Valparaiso set a new school record, breaking the previous of 17.
The Falcons were on the defense for the majority of the first half, as Ball State outshot the Orange and Brown 14-0 over the opening 45-minute period.
Cadel and the BGSU defense saw action early throughout the first half. The Cardinals' Abigail Boswell and Lorina White broke by the Falcon backline to record shots on goal in the 7th and 12th minutes to get things started for Ball State, giving Cadel her first two saves of the game.
The Cardinals nearly took the lead in the 31st minute following a shot by Chay McNitt that sailed over an extended Cadel, hitting the upper right crossbar and rolling out of bounds.
Cadel tallied three more saves in the half to keep the match scoreless 0-0 heading into halftime.
It appeared Ball State would pick up where they left off in the first half as Bowell launched a shot at Cadel in the opening minute of the second period, but Cadel corralled the ball for her sixth save of the game and then the Falcon offense took over.
"We had a lot more energy in the second half," said Cadel. "But it's just a matter of putting together a full 90 minutes. We had to go at them. It was 0-0 at halftime, so just knowing we had to bring the energy, we had to lift it up is what contributed to that."
With a new-found energy in the second half, the BGSU attack registered four shots in six minutes. The first came two minutes into the period on a shot from Alexa Cheripko, but the shot rolled into the waiting arms of Ball State goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel. Paige Amodio fired an attempt of her own a minute later, but it was also saved by Heintschel. In the 53rd minute, redshirt-freshman Erica Hubert ripped a shot, but it was blocked by a Cardinal defender. She chased down her own rebound and launched another shot, this one sailing over the top of the net.
The Falcon defense was tested yet again as Ball State earned back-to-back corner kicks midway through the second half. On the second, Lauren Hall's corner kick found Lorina White in the box as she headed the ball past Cadel in the 64th minute for the go-ahead goal to put the Cardinal's up 1-0.
It was an aggressive match played by both teams, as Ball State finished with one yellow card and Bowling Green with two.
In the 71st minute, following a hard foul by Morgan Abbitt, Chelsy Swackhamer's penalty kick missed wide right as the Cardinals missed an opportunity to go up two on the Falcons.
Not deterred, BGSU continued to search for its attack, as Hubert's shot in the 77th minute was saved by Heintschel. Madison Schupbach registered a shot late in the game, and Hubert added one more of her own, but Hubert's attempt rolled just left of the goal as time was running out for the Falcons.
Hubert finished the game with over half of the team's shots in 74 minutes of play. Amodio, Hubert and Cheripko recorded the Falcons' three shots on goal in the match.
Ball State outshot Bowling Green 24-7 for the contest and also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
"We're walking out of two games against two good team that are traditionally at the top of the conference," said Basalyga. "They definitely made us better. For us, it's really just a belief system that we are good enough, that we have the ideas and players to have success in a 90-minute game. But seeing that through for 90 minutes is something we are going to continue to work on."
The loss drops the Falcons to 4-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the MAC, while the Cardinals improve to 6-2-2 overall and remain undefeated in conference play.
"This weekend is behind us. We have another two good teams and two games next weekend, so we'll put in the work this week, competing everyday. We just know it's about the process and moving forward," added co-captain Cadel.
The Falcons will remain at home next weekend for two MAC East contests. The first comes against the Akron Zips on Friday night, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium. BGSU then faces Buffalo on Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
