Postgame Interview with Head Coach Lindsay Basalyga
Bowling Green, Ohio – Redshirt freshman Erica Hubert scored two goals as the BGSU Falcons defeated Findlay Tuesday evening at Cochrane Stadium, 4-0. The Falcons are now 3-0 at home, totaling 11 goals in those three wins.
BGSU started the scoring early, going up 1-0 in the ninth minute on Hubert's first goal of the game. Freshman Morgan Abbitt played the ball from midfield where Hubert picked it up and launched a shot into the lower right corner of the goal passed a charging Findlay goalkeeper.
Seven minutes later, Hubert found the net again for her fourth goal of the season. Mikaela Couch and Abbitt combined for the assist as the Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute. The Orange and Brown would take that score into the half.
The last time a BGSU player recorded a multi-goal game was one year and one day ago when Sidney Huth scored two goals against Chicago State in an 8-0 Falcon victory.
"I thought we did a really good job of possessing the ball," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "I think the risk taking was there, and we haven't necessarily seen that in the last two games as much. Something we mentioned in pregame was that we wanted to be the ones that set the bar in terms of the speed of play, and I certainly think we did that right from the first whistle."
The second half began much like the first, with the Falcons scoring yet again, this time on a goal from Couch in the 52nd minute. The sophomore dribbled up the middle of the field, after getting the ball from Haley Parkinson and Madison Schupbach, and put the shot past Findlay keeper Herd SchauDon. The goal was Couch's fourth of the season, tying her with Hubert for the team lead.
"[Hubert and Couch] are fun to watch. They are linking up really well and the pace of the pass that Erica is putting on the ball that meets Mikaela's skill set has been pretty much on point," added Basalyga.
Almost four minutes later, Couch was in the middle of the action again, finding Kara Ross, who buried a shot just under the cross bar. Ross's goal in the 56th minute would be the last of the game.
Falcon goalkeepers Lauren Cadel and Alexis Smith were never really threatened in the match, halting all Oiler scoring opportunities. Cadel, who played the first 60 minutes of the game, recorded five saves and Smith finished the game with three.
Bowling Green has yet to allow a goal at Cochrane Stadium this season. The Falcons defeated Chicago State 4-0, IPFW 3-0 and added tonight's 4-0 win.
BGSU, who entered the match ranked second in shots per game in the MAC, tallied another 24 shots against Findlay. The Falcons also entered tonight's game leading the MAC in goals per game.
The 13 goals Bowling Green has scored this season, nearly matches the total from all of 2014 (15). The Falcons have also scored at least one goal in each of the team's five matches.
The Falcons travel to Eastern Illinois Friday and Valparaiso Sunday for two away matchups, before returning home Sept. 17 against Butler.
"This is the first time we are going on the road for a Friday Sunday split, so we'll see what our mentality looks like, what our focus looks like on the road. This was a great game for us to realize we can still score goals and we still know how to win," said Basalyga.
