BGSU Wins 5-2 Against Titans
January 17, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Detroit, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over the University of Detroit Sunday evening, picking up the team's first win of the 2016 season and giving head coach Olga Elkin her first win as head coach of the Falcons.
"It was really exciting to pick up our first win today," Elkin said. "The girls have been working extremely hard these past few months and it was great to see their hard work pay off. This was a great team win with a lot of energy and focus. We had three freshman get wins and at the same time to see just how exciting college tennis is. I am excited to watch this team grow and see what they can accomplish this season."
BG earned four points from singles, getting victories from freshmen Polina Radeva, Paula Comella Aguilo and Marina Ferrero, as well as from sophomore Emily Witt.
Radeva tallied another win by defeating Detroit's Valeryia Kulikovskaya in No. 1 singles. After having lost the first set 6-4, Radeva came back in the second and third sets, winning both by identical 6-3 scores, to capture the match. Radeva's record improved 9-4 after Sunday's win – including the fall season.
At No. 2 singles, Aguilo took down Irina Slizovskaya, winning the first set 6-0 and the second set 6-1. Aguilo is now 10-3 overall on the season.
Witt triumphed against the Titans Viktoria Laskutova in a grueling match at No. 4 singles. Witt, who lost the first set 6-4, bounced back to win the second set 7-5 and the third set 10-6. With the win, Witt is now 7-6 overall this season in singles play.
Picking up her first collegiate win of the season is Ferrero, who defeated Detroit's Iris Thioux 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 6 singles slot.
In doubles, BG had two duos earn wins, Radeva and Witt along with Aguilo and Drew Fillis.
At No. 1 doubles Radeva and Witt earned their sixth win of the season, defeating duo Kulikoyskaya and Slizovskaya of Detroit, 7-5.
Aguilo and Fillis are now 9-3 overall this season after winning their No. 2 doubles match 6-1 against the Titans' Davydova and Van Der Goot.
The victory shows just how far the Falcons have come in a short time. BGSU is now 1-1 on the season after an 0-17 campaign in 2015, including a 6-1 loss to Detroit just a year ago.
The Falcons are back in action Jan. 22 against Northern Kentucky University at 6 pm in Dayton.
