Student-Athletes Give Back For Martin Luther King Jr. Day Of Service

Bowling Green, Ohio – While Bowling Green State University is closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Bowling Green State University's students commit to a day of service. BGSU's student-athletes take part in the day of service as well. This year, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) chose to make blankets for the Cocoon Shelter in Bowling Green, which provides safety, healing and justice for battered women and their children.

"We get so much from the community that it's very important to give back as well," Chet Hesson, BGSU's Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services, said. "Having student-athletes show support for the community members who support them is very important."

More than 200 of BGSU's student-athletes were invited to take part in blanket-making.

"It's good to give back to the community that supports you the most," BGSU sophomore hockey player Chris Nell said. "It's great to take days like this and to reflect outside of the school and hockey. The community is here to support us through the ups and downs in athletics. And it's fun too. We get to see who's making the most or the best blankets."
