Hawkins, Griffin Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
January 25, 2016 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Swimming & Diving
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Brandon Hawkins and swimmer Victoria Griffin.
Male Athlete of the Week
Brandon Hawkins, a sophomore from Macomb, Mich., had three goals and two weekends as the Falcons posted the highest-scoring offensive weekend in the program in 11 years. Hawkins recorded three points in the team's 6-2 win to kick off the series and then picked up two goals in the identical 6-2 victory to close the weekend. He took a team-high 11 shots and was +3 on-ice. In Thursday's win, he assisted on the team's first goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead after the first period. In a five-goal flurry in the second, Hawkins scored to put BGSU ahead 4-1 and then assisted on the next goal to essentially put the game away. Friday, Hawkins again scored a second-period goal that gave Bowling Green a 4-1 edge. He then closed out the weekend with a goal that finished the scoring just 52 seconds into the third. That capped Hawkins' first multi-goal game of the season and his three-point night Thursday was also a season-best.

Female Athlete of the Week
Victoria Griffin, a junior from Littlestown, Pa., was integral in helping the Falcons to their first dual meet win over Miami since the turn of the century, as BGSU edged out the RedHawks 151-149 by virtue of winning the 400 free relay – the meet's final event. Griffin swam the lead leg of the 400 free relay team, putting the Falcons in front to a lead that they would not relinquish to clinch the win. Griffin also won the 50 and 100 free in the meet, along with swimming the freestyle leg of the 400 medley relay for the team that finished second in the meet.
