Aguilo, Radeva and Witt Score For Falcons Against Dayton
January 29, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Perrysburg, Ohio – Bowling Green State University tennis freshmen Polina Radeva and Paula Comella Aguilo won No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, but the visiting University of Dayton Flyers defeated the Falcons, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Perrysburg Tennis Center.
At No. 1 singles, the Flyers' Marlys Bridgham won the first two games over Aguilo. She fought back quickly and eventually tied it up at 5-5. Aguilo never looked back, winning the set 7-5 then going on to take the second set 6-3.
Radeva picked up her second win of the season against Dayton's Alex Townsend. Townsend was blanked in the first set with Radeva winning, 6-0. Radeva dropped just one game in the second set and went on to win, 6-1.
Sophomore Emily Witt fought hard against Jackie Kawamoto at No. 4 singles. Witt fell behind 3-0 to start but battled back for a 7-6 (6) victory in the first frame. In the second set, Witt took a 2-0 lead but Kawamoto answered back to tie it at 2-2 and again at 3-3. She then took control to force a third set tie-breaker with a 6-3 win. In that tie-breaker, Kawamoto won 10-5.
"Today was a winnable match for us," Head coach Olga Elkin said. "I was disappointed with the way that we played in doubles today, that point is huge for us. The girls came back and battled in singles and we definitely learned a lot in this match."
At No. 2 doubles, Radeva and Witt add a tally to the win column, improving their record to 2-1. In a nip-and-tuck battle, the two doubles teams answered each other game-by-game. Eventually, Radeva and Witt pulled out the 7-6 win.
Aguilo and senior Drew Fillis battled with Mandy Marchant and Marlys Bridgham at No. 1 doubles. Aguilo and Fillis were down most of the match before tying at 5-5. Dayton pulled away late to win, 7-5.
The Falcons return to action Sunday in South Bend, Ind. going against Notre Dame at 5 pm.
