BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Bowling Green men's golf team was able to complete the 54-hole Mountaineer Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon, despite fog delays throughout the tournament. Bowling Green ultimately finished eighth overall in the 14-team field with a total team score of 891, +27.
The Falcons had two holes to complete from the second round yesterday, in addition to the entire third round of competition today. After the second round, Bowling Green was eighth overall, with a combined team score of 298, 292 – 590, +14.
"The team drove it really well, but we made too many mistakes with short clubs in our hands," Bowling Green men's golf head coach Kevin Farrell said. "It's an awesome Pete Dye golf course and as soon as you make a mistake it's very penal."
Over the course of the tournament, the Falcons all individually hit final scores within just eight strokes of each other, the lowest coming from senior Brett Rinker, with which he carded a final score of 222, +6 by shooting rounds of 72, 71, 79. The second round score for the Slippery Rock, Pa. native marked a new season low, ultimately leading to a combined six birdies and a team-leading 37 pars over the course of the tournament. The new season low score placed Rinker tied for 29th overall and on top of the Falcons leaderboard.
Making strides up the board over the course of the tournament was redshirt sophomore Max Rispler, who came in a tie for 33rd overall after shooting rounds of 79, 71, and 74. Coming in third on the Falcons lineup was senior Jose Narro, who shot consistent rounds of 76 through the first 36 holes, then turned in a round low of 73 in the final round this afternoon. The native of Tampico, Mexico finished in a tie for 39th overall by a total mark of 225, +9 in the process of also tallying 32 pars and eight birdies through the two-day competition. Narro also earned a +1, 4.03 average on par four scoring, which led the Bowling Green squad in the category.
A native of Sevilla, Spain, sophomore Pablo Heredia Iglesias also jumped up the Falcons leaderboard by marking rounds of 71, 76 and 80 for a two-day total of 227, +11. Inglesias' first round of 71 was a new best for the fall season, and led to a tournament total of 34 pars, eight birdies and a -1, 4.92 average on par five scoring, ranking him second overall on the Bowling Green team in each of the respective categories. After the two-day Intercollegiate, Inglesias placed in a tie for 48th overall.
For the first time this fall season, junior Mitchell Kontak made an appearance in the Falcons lineup, and he scored a 230, +14 in the event. Kontak also sunk a total of 33 pars, seven birdies and averaged a 3.17, +2 mark on par three scoring through the 54 holes of competition.
Arkansas took the team title at this year's West Virginia-hosted Mountaineer Intercollegiate with a final team score of 858, -6, while Miami's Patrick Flavin earned the individual title with a score of 210, -6.
