Men's Golf Returns to Fall Action at Mountaineer Intercollegiate

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green men's golf team will continue action in the fall season by competing at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11. The West Virginia-hosted event is to be held at the Pete Dye Golf Club, a par-72, 7,353 yard course for 54-holes of competition.
In addition to Bowling Green, West Virginia will host a 14-team field in Arkansas, Mississippi State, East Carolina, James Madison, Memphis, Cincinnati, Akron, Arkansas State, Miami (OH), Toledo, Marshall and Seton Hall, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Monday morning. After the 36-holes of play on Monday, the Intercollegiate will wrap up with the final round of 18-holes on Tuesday with another 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
The Falcons will send out a similar lineup to the previous two tournaments of the fall season, with the addition of junior Mitchell Kontak. Kontak will be rounding out the lineup behind Jose Narro in the No. 1 spot, Max Rispler No. 2, Pablo Heredia Iglesias in the No. 3 and Brett Rinker at the No. 4 spot.
Most recently, the Falcons participated in the Inverness Intercollegiate, in which the team finished in a tie for eighth overall with a team score of 878, +26.
In the first two events of the fall, senior Narro finished in 23rd place overall at both the Marshall Invitational and the Inverness Intercollegiate. The Tampico, Mexico native shot a low round of 71 at Inverness for a total score of 217, +4, and carded a season low round of 69 in the final round of the Marshall Invitational, ultimately leading to a final of 214, +4.
Sophomore Rispler finished on top of the Bowling Green lineup for the consecutive tournament after shooting a total of 212, -1 at the Inverness Intercollegiate. The native of Grand Rapids, Mich. tied for ninth overall with rounds of 69, 71, and 72, earning him Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week honors. Rispler opened the season with a 54-hole total of 212, +2 at the Marshall Invitational, marking a 15th place tie overall at the two-day event.
Two weeks back, sophomore Heredia Iglesias carded a team-low of 69 in the first round of the Inverness Intercollegiate, leading to a 54-hole final score of 219, +6 for a tie of 32nd-place overall. To open the fall season, the Sevilla, Spain native tied for 36th overall with scores of 72, 77, and 69, in a final of 218, +8 at the Marshall Invitational.
Senior Rinker will compete in his third tournament of the fall campaign at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate. The native of Slippery Rock, Pa. first carded a total score of 232, +22 at the Marshall Invitational, followed by a 233, +20 at the Inverness Intercollegiate. Rinker notched a score of 78 in the final round, after shooting a 77 and 78 in the first two rounds at Inverness, leading to a finish of 66th overall.
Junior Kontak will compete in his first event of the year for the Falcons at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate, after participating in six events in his sophomore season. The Toledo, Ohio native turned in a stroke average of 77.31 over 16 rounds of golf last season, leading to two top-25 finishes on the year. At last year's Mountaineer Intercollegiate, Kontak recorded a score of 158, +14, over 36-holes of play, although he really stood out at the Rocket Individual Classic in which he placed in a tie for second-place overall with a 36-hole score of 152, +8.
The inaugural Mountaineer Intercollegiate was cut short to 36-holes last season due to frost delays both mornings. Penn State ultimately won the 2015 team title with a two-round score of 294, 291 = 585, +5, while Cincinnati's Davis Baxter was the medalist with a score of 70 in the first round, followed by a 69 in the second round for an Invite total of 139, -5.
