BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team took a 20-3 lead less than seven minutes into the game, and went on to cruise to an 86-60 victory over Notre Dame College on Tuesday (Nov. 29) night at the Stroh Center. The Falcons had five players score in double figures for the first time since Jan. 12, 2016. Bowling Green has now had at least four players score in double figures over the team's three-game winning streak.
After starting the season with four-consecutive losses, the Falcons improved to 3-4 on the season with the win. Notre Dame College falls to 4-3 with the loss.
Antwon Lillard registered his first-career double-double, as he scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds. Prior to tonight's game, Zack Denny was the only player on the BGSU roster to have recorded a double-double. Lillard, who shot 4-for-7 from the field, has scored at least 10 points in seven of his nine career starts.
Wes Alcegaire led all scorers in the game, as he poured in a season-high 20 points. The senior forward connected on 3-of-7 attempts from long range, shot 7-of-13 for the game, and also pulled down five rebounds. Demajeo Wiggins finished the game with 13 points and seven rebounds. Wiggins went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe, and 4-for-5 from the floor.
Denny scored 11 points in 24 minutes. He also chipped in with six rebounds, two blocks, one assist, and went a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. The senior, who is 239 points shy of 1,000 for his career, also hit one three-ball. Denny is now nine bombs shy of tying Jordon Crawford (2009-13) for 10th most all-time in program history.
Dylan Frye was the fifth Falcon in double figures. After scoring a career-high 15 points in a win over Morgan State on Nov. 26, Frye scored 10 points, while adding four rebounds and two assists. Frye went 2-for-5 from downtown, and has now hit at least two three-pointers in three-consecutive games. Frye finished the night shooting 4-for-7 from the field.
Ismail Ali distributed the basketball nicely all evening, and finished the game with a season-high nine assists. Ali, who had just two turnovers, also had five points and four rebounds. Rodrick Caldwell did a nice job spelling Ali off the bench. The freshman went 2-for-3 from the field, and 1-for-1 from long range. He finished with eight points, two assists and two rebounds.
Malik Hluchoweckyj scored his first points of the season, as he converted a free throw, and then scored a transition basket. Matt Fox also had three points. He went 1-for-3 from downtown. Ethan Good also saw action in the ballgame.
Bowling Green shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field, while holding NDC to 35.2 percent (25-of-71) shooting. BGSU held NDC to just three made three-point field goals on 28 attempts, while the Falcons of Bowling Green shot 36.0 percent (9-of-25) from downtown. BGSU went 21-of-27 from the line, while NDC made 7-of-14 free throws.
For the fifth time this season, Bowling Green won the rebounding battle. BGSU had 46 rebounds compared to NDC's 42. The BGSU bench outscored Notre Dame College's bench, 24-10. Bowling Green had more points in the paint (30-26), more points off turnovers (18-14), and more fast-break points (20-12).
Bowling Green will now hit the road for a pair of difficult road games. The Falcons will play Cincinnati on Dec. 4, and then head straight to Evansville for a game on Dec. 6. Both basketball games are slated to tip at 8 p.m.
