Â
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team previewed the 2017 season for a large group of loudly cheering fans at the annual Orange and Brown intrasquad meet on Friday night (Dec. 9). The meet was held at Anderson Arena.
Â
The team held the four events in the order of their rotation for the season-opening meet at Penn State. The Falcons competed on bars first, followed by the beam and floor exercise, before completing the meet with the vault.
Â
"I think (the team) did well. Having a crowd here, rotating in a different way by starting on bars, which we hadn't done yet, definitely created the environment that we wanted," said BGSU gymnastics head coach Kerrie Turner. "They had to handle those nerves, and each event got a little bit better."
Â
The Falcons began the night on the uneven bars and compiled their lowest team score of the evening (47.550) in that event. Rachel Reis and Laura Mitchell tied at 9.725 for the best individual mark, while freshman Lexi Augustine debuted with a 9.625.
Â
Turner said, "We've been plagued by some injuries, with our athletes on uneven bars in particular, but I can see that in the next month that we'll be right were we need to be."
Â
Bowling Green's gymnasts followed the bars by competing on the beam, and that meant another performance from Mitchell. The defending Mid-American Conference beam champion did not disappoint by leading the team with a 9.725. Her mark was matched by Augustine and senior Victoria Heath.
Â
After posting a 48.525 on beam, the team moved to floor exercise and really got into a groove. Heath, Augustine and sophomore Kayla Rose each earned 9.800 scores, while East added a 9.750. Those marks gave BGSU a 48.550 on the floor.
Â
The Falcons saved their best for last by soaring on the vault. Heath led the squad and equaled her career best with a fantastic leap that earned a 9.825 from the judges. Senior Lauren Feely, who is the MAC's defending all-around champion and was the co-champion in the vault in 2015, notched a 9.800 in her only action of the meet. Lauren De Meno (9.800) and junior transfer India McPeak (9.750) also excelled.
Â
Overall, the team registered a 48.900 on the vault, which gave BGSU a meet total of 193.525.
Â
No one competed in all four events; however, several members of the team participated in three of the four, including two freshmen. Augustine and East both showed their versatility and scored a minimum of 9.625 in all of their event, while fellow freshman Taylor Worthington had a solid night on the vault and beam.
Â
"I'm really happy with our freshmen today. What I've noticed from the intrasquads we've done this fall is that they are really beginning to gain their composure in competition," said Turner. "Lexi in particular was one who was really nervous at our first intrasquad, and today I can see a lot of maturity there. Taylor Worthington did a nice job, Jovannah East, who's actually had a small injury, came back really strong today."
Â
BGSU regular season begins in just four weeks. The Falcons will travel to University Park, Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 7 to meet Penn State, Temple and Brigham Young in a season-opening quad meet. The team will host their first meet at Anderson Arena two weeks later, against Illinois State on Jan. 21.
