JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened the 2016 season by defeating the East Tennessee State Buccaneers, 7-1, Friday afternoon at Thomas Stadium. Junior C.J. Schildt picked up the win in his collegiate debut, while a four-run eighth inning allowed BGSU to pull away with the victory.
"This was a great win for us to open the 2016 season," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We got a great effort on the mound by both C.J. and Devin, and got some timely hitting throughout the game. We've put ourselves in a good position to try and win this series."
Leading 3-1 in the top of the eighth, freshmen Cam Daugherty was called upon to pinch-hit with the bases loaded. In his first-career plate appearance, and after working a full-count, Daugherty ripped a bases-clearing double down the right-field line to give BGSU a 6-1 lead. Greg Basalyga tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single in the top of the ninth.
Schildt gave the Orange and Brown five innings of one-run ball. He fanned four, walking just one. Schildt threw two perfect innings to open his start, stranded a pair in the third, before yielding the first run of the contest in the fourth. The southpaw went on to register a strikeout with a runner at third to end his outing.
Not to be outdone by his brother, Devin Daugherty took over for Schildt to start the sixth, and went on to pitch four shutout innings to earn the save. Daugherty needed just 32 pitches to blank the Buccaneers, allowing two hits while striking out four and walking none. The senior set down ETSU in order in both the seventh and ninth.
Trey York doubled to leadoff ETSU's one-run fourth. Kevin Phillips then singled into left field to break the scoreless tie. However, Schildt was able to limit the damage nicely. After a third-straight hit to open the inning, Schildt recorded a fly out, strikeout and groundout in consecutive fashion to get out of the jam with just one run surrendered.
The Falcons would respond quickly, however, spelling the end for ETSU starter Blake Smith in the top of the fifth. Nick Glanzman led off the rally with a full-count single through the left side. Hunter Clanin then drew his second walk of the ballgame, before freshman Logan Giddings – who was making his Falcon debut – moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Justin Mott promptly singled the pair home with a single into center field to give BGSU a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Riley Minorik – also making his collegiate debut – kept things going with his first-career hit. Kory Brown then loaded the bases with a single through the left side, but Peyton Taylor – who took over for Smith after the Minorik single – retired two straight Falcons with the bases loaded.
All four runs that were knocked in during the eighth came with two outs. Matt Smith – who finished the day 2-for-5 with a run and stolen base – recorded his first hit of the ballgame to start the rally. After a Basalyga strikeout, Randy Righter picked up his first hit of the season, as well, to put runners on the corners.
Glanzman followed with a single threw the right side to plate Smith, giving the Orange and Brown a 3-1 lead. Clanin then drew his third walk of the game to set up Daugherty's three-RBI double. Clanin reached base safely four times, as he also reached on an error in the sixth.
Brown – who was a part of the Falcons' two-run fifth – went 2-for-4 and scored a run on the afternoon. The senior – who was hit by a pitch in the game, as well – reached base safely three times. Addison Rospert pinch ran in the ninth after Basalyga's RBI, and went on to swipe a bag.
The Falcons will resume the series with the Buccaneers tomorrow at 2 p.m., before concluding the three-game set with a 1 p.m. start time on Sunday. Zac Carey will get the ball for BGSU tomorrow, with Andrew Lacinak getting the start on the mound Sunday.
