Schedule: 2015-16 BGSU Men's Basketball Schedule
Kent, Ohio – Bowling Green's Spencer Parker and Wes Alcegaire each scored in double figures for the Falcons, however, BGSU came up short in a 70-54 road loss to the Kent State Golden Flashes on Tuesday night at the M.A.C. Center in Kent, Ohio.
The first 15 minutes of the game saw four ties and seven lead changes, before a BGSU field goal drought of over eight minutes followed by a 7-0 sprint by the Golden Flashes allowed Kent State to take the lead for good and extend it to double digits in the second half for the win.
The loss drops BGSU to 14-16 overall and 5-12 in the MAC. The win pushes Kent State to 19-11 overall and 10-7 in the MAC.
Parker finished the game with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds, while Alcegaire added 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting overall. Demajeo Wiggins finished with seven points, while David Joseph dished out a team-high five assists in the loss.
For Kent State, Jimmy Hall totaled a game-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting and hauled in nine rebounds. Galal Cancer poured in 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Kellon Thomas finished with 10 points, six assists and two steals. Senior Chris Ortiz grabbed 12 rebounds in 33 minutes in his final home game at the M.A.C. Center.
Both teams struggled to find their offensive flow off of the opening tip, as neither team hit a field goal for the first 1:28 of the contest until a jump hook in the lane from BGSU's Wiggins at the 18:32 mark put the visitors in brown in front at 3-2.
The Golden Flashes answered with a basket on the low block from Hall, as the two teams then swapped buckets back-and-forth for the next two minutes until a three-pointer from Alcegaire gave BGSU an 8-6 lead with 16:59 to go in the first half of play.
After a Hall offensive rebound and lay in basket tied the game back up at 8-8 at the 16:24, the two teams were both bitten by the turnover bug, as the two combined for seven turnovers over the next four minutes of play until a jumper in the lane from Kent State's Jaylin Walker at the 12:01 mark put the Golden Flashes on top by two at 10-8.
Two free throws from Zack Denny tied the score up at 10-10, however, the field goal drought continued for the Falcons, as BGSU could not find the bottom of the net for over eight minutes yet used their defense to hold Kent State to just four points during that span to trail by just two at 12-10.
An offensive rebound and put back by Parker at the 8:35 mark ended the Falcons' field goal drought, but more importantly knotted the game back up at 12-12.
Kent State's Hall answered with a three-pointer from the wing to give the lead back to the home team at 15-12 at the 8:32 mark, a lead that the Golden Flashes would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
BGSU trimmed the Kent State lead to one at 15-14 on a layup in the paint from Wiggins with 8:07 to go before the halftime break, before the Golden Flashes ran off seven straight points and outscored the Falcons 11-3 over a three minute stretch to pull out to a nine-point lead at 26-17 at the five minute mark of the opening period.
The two teams traded baskets over the next 1:36 of the contest, when a put back slam from JD Tisdale at the 3:24 mark seemed to spark the Falcons who went on an 8-2 surge to close the gap to just three points at 30-27 on two straight free throws from Alcegaire with 1:23 left in the half.
However, Kent State added a three-pointer late in the half with under a minute to play to take a 33-27 lead into the halftime break.
The Falcons opened up the second half with a layup down low from Parker to put the visitors within four at 33-29 less than 30 seconds into the frame, however, BGSU would not get any closer for the remainder of the night.
With a 33-29 lead, the Golden Flashes used the free throw line, where they went 5-of-5, and got baskets from Khaliq Spicer, Hall and Cancer to flash out on a 13-3 run to push their lead to as much as 14 points at 46-32 on back-to-back free throws from Raasean Davis with 14:31 to go in the game.
BGSU answered the run with four quick points and a 6-2 spurt on a layup from Parker, a jumper from Ismail Ali and two foul shots from Parker over the next four minutes of play to put the Falcons within 10 at 48-38 with 11:07 left on the game clock.
The Falcons struggled to stop the Kent State offensive attack, as the Golden Flashes scored 10 of the next 12 points in the game, a 10-2 points edge, to roll their lead out to 18 at 58-40 on back-to-back three-pointers from Cancer.
Back-to-back treys from BGSU's Alcegaire and Parker on the next two BGSU possessions put the Falcons down 12 at 58-46 with 6:27 to play, yet Kent State answered once more with four quick points and a 6-2 spurt to extend the lead back out to 16 at 64-48 with 5:04 to go in regulation.
The Falcons got a driving layup from Parker to get to within 14 at 64-50, yet would not score for the next 3:31 of the half to allow Kent State to use a 6-0 run to push the lead out to 20 at 70-50, before the Falcons got a late dunk and layup from Antwon Lillard, each with less than 30 seconds to go, to put the final score at 70-54.
BGSU shot just 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field overall, including going 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from behind the three-point line.
Kent State, who shot 52.2 percent (12-of-23) in the second half, went 26-of-56 (46.4 percent) overall for the contest and held a five point advantage at the free throw line where the Golden Flashes were 13-of-16 (81.3 percent) on the night.
The Falcons were out-rebounded 39-29 overall for the game and were outscored 32-28 in points in the paint.
BGSU (14-16, 5-12 MAC) will conclude the regular season slate at home versus Buffalo on Senior Night, Friday, Mar. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Stroh Center. Prior to the game, the Falcons will recognize seniors Spencer Parker, David Joseph and Brandon Busuttil.
