Bowling Green, Ohio – After teeing-off its 2016 spring season two weeks ago at the Colleton River Collegiate on Mar. 7-8, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team will return to the links for competition this week on Mar. 21-22 to participate in the 2016 Lone Star Invitational hosted by the UT-San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
This will mark the second straight year in which the Falcons have competed in the Lone Star Invitational, as BGSU posted a ninth-place finish with a 54-hole team score of 864, even par, in last year's tournament.
"We are excited to get back to competition after working hard over the last two weeks," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "We played well in this tournament last season against a very strong tournament field. We have been here before so I expect our guys to come out and play well this week at a very nice golf course."
The 2016 event will once again be held at the par-72, 7,247-yards Briggs Ranch Golf Club and will consist of three rounds of play. Round one will start on Monday, Mar. 21, with a shotgun start set for 8:30 a.m. CST (9:30 a.m. EST), which will be immediately followed by round two in the afternoon session. The third and final round of play is slated for an 8:30 a.m. CST (9:30 a.m. EST) shotgun start on Tuesday, Mar. 22.
The 17-team tournament field in 2016 includes Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Houston Baptist, Arkansas-Little Rock, Louisiana-Lafayette, McNeese State, Miami (Ohio), Mississippi State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, North Texas, Ohio State, Rice, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State, UTEP and the host institution in UTSA.
A total of eight of the 17 teams are ranked in the top-100 by Golfstat in (50) New Mexico, (68) North Texas, (75) Ohio State, (76) McNeese State, (92) Mississippi State, (94) UTSA, (98) UTEP and (100) Miami (Ohio).
The Falcons' lineup for the two-day event in Texas will be comprised up of two juniors, a redshirt-freshman and two true freshmen in Jose Narro, Pablo Heredia Iglesias, Brett Rinker, Max Rispler and Trey Walker.
Narro will tee-off for the Falcons in the No. 1 spot for the eighth straight event this season for Coach Farrell's squad. Narro, who is second on the team with a stroke average of 72.80 over 20 rounds of play for the year, has already recorded four top-25 place finishes this year, including a third-place finish in the fall opener at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. The junior is coming off a 21st-place showing with a 54-hole score of 227, +11, two weeks ago at the Colleton River Collegiate. At last year's Lone Star Invitational, the Tampico, Mexico native, who played high school golf in Texas, finished in a tie for 31st overall with a 54-hole score of 217, +1.
At the No. 2 position for the Falcons in the eighth straight tournament is Heredia Iglesias. The first-year Falcon has registered a stroke average of 73.95 over his first 20 rounds of play as a Falcon this season, which includes a BGSU career-low 18-hole score of 66. The Spaniard turned in a 54-hole score of 229, +13, with rounds of 72, 75 and 82 last time out to finish in 30th overall at the Colleton River Collegiate in South Carolina.
Rinker will once again compete for the Falcons at the No. 3 slot, as the junior leads the team with a 72.40 stroke average over 20 rounds of play thus far this year. Rinker, who finished runner-up at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate during the fall season, has finished in the top-30 in all seven events that he has played in this year. The junior finished tied with Narro as the top-Falcon in BGSU's last event, finishing in a tie for 21st overall with a 54-hole score of 227, +11, at the Colleton River Collegiate. At the 2015 Lone Star Invitational just one year ago, Rinker carded rounds of 73, 71 and 69 to finish in a tie for 18th overall with his BGSU low 54-hole score of 213, -3 under par.
Like Heredia Iglesias, both Rispler and Walker will be playing in their first Lone Star Invitational tournament this week.
Rispler will break into the lineup for the first time this year, as he will tee-off at the No. 4 position for the Falcons in Texas on Monday and Tuesday. The redshirt-freshman, who transferred in from South Alabama last fall, has played in three events as an individual on the year and has posted a stroke average of 76.63 over eight rounds of golf. The Michigan native has carded a low round 72 thus far this year and finished in a tie for 31st overall last time out with a 54-hole score of 230, +14, as an individual at the Colleton River Collegiate.
Playing in his fifth event on the year, Walker will round out the BGSU lineup at the No. 5 spot. The freshman has turned in a stroke average of 77.73 thus far this year over 11 rounds of play and has carded a low round 72 in his first year as a Falcon. Walker carded rounds of 80, 83 and 84 to finish in a tie for 79th overall with a 54-hole score of 247, +31, earlier this month at the Colleton River Collegiate.
