Falcons Fly North For Battle Of I-75

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team will take on the Toledo Rockets in the Battle of I-75 Friday. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts on the UT campus. In the event of inclement weather, the match would be held indoors at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
The Orange and Brown went on the road last weekend to begin conference play, falling to Northern Illinois, 5-2, Friday and also Western Michigan, 6-1, Sunday.
On Friday, freshman Polina Radeva and sophomore Emily Witt picked up two points for the Falcons. Radeva defeated Cristina Alvarez, 7-5, 7-6 and Witt picked up the win by taking down Michelle Erasmus, 6-1, 6-3.
Against Western Michigan, freshman Paula Comella picked up her ninth singles win this season by defeating Melina Lyubomirova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Toledo enters the weekend with an overall record of 6-8 and 1-1 in the MAC. The Rockets defeated Akron and fell to Buffalo to open conference play. Last season, head coach Tracy Mauntler's team finished with records of 13-10 overall and 4-4 in the MAC. The returners for UT are seniors Mackenzie Bowman, Emily Mazzola, Lauren Thai and sophomore Sidnay Huck. Toledo was predicted to finish sixth in the MAC, according to the preseason poll. The Falcons lead the Rockets, 26-18, in the all-time series between the teams.
The Falcons saw success against UT at the BGSU Invitational held in the fall. Comella defeated Thai in the second round of flight two singles, 7-5, 6-1. BG picked up another win in doubles from Comella and senior Drew Fillis. The tandem blanked Huck and Thai in the first round of the top flight, 6-0.
Following this weekend's match, the Falcons will return home to face Eastern Michigan Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
