Falcons Shine In Latest NCAA APR Report
April 20, 2016 | General, Compliance, Falcon Club, Student-Athlete Services
Bowling Green, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department posted some of its best Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in history, as released by the NCAA today. Ten of the department's 17 teams (indoor and outdoor track and field are grouped together) had the same or better APR as a year ago. Six teams posted their best APR scores since the rating system began for the 2004-05 season.
All of the Falcons' 18 sports have multi-year APR rates of 950 or above and eight posted a perfect 1000 single-year rate in the latest report for the 2014-15 year. All 18 of BGSU's teams were comfortably above the NCAA's 930 minimum score to receive scholarship limitations or postseason bans. Men's cross country, hockey, women's golf, gymnastics and swim/dive have the highest APR scores in the conference for their respective sports.
"What a sensational academic year for our student-athletes," Assistant Athletics Director for Academics & Student Services Chet Hesson said. "Our entire department should be proud of the continued upward trend of having our student-athletes graduate on time and at extraordinarily high rates in comparison to our peers."
BGSU had eight teams post a perfect single-year rate. The men's cross country, men's golf, hockey, women's cross country, women's golf, gymnastics, softball and swim/dive programs all posted a 1,000 for the 2014-15 year. The women's golf team has earned a perfect single-year score for seven straight years, while men's cross country has done so for six straight years. Gymnastics now has a stretch of four straight perfect scores and men's golf has done so in back-to-back years.
From a multi-year perspective, all 18 teams scored a 950 or better. Men's cross country, women's golf and gymnastics all scored a perfect 1,000 and were given public recognition last week for rating among the top 10 percent of all programs in their sports for APR. Hockey (998), softball (993), swim/dive (993) and tennis (991) were all at 990 or better, while volleyball (989), women's soccer (987), women's basketball (985) and track and field (983) also posted strong scores.
In all, 10 of BGSU's 17 sports posted scores equal to or better than a year ago. The largest increases came from men's golf (improved from 933 to 960), hockey (up from 990 to 998), track and field (improved from 974 to 983), softball (up from 988 to 993) and gymnastics (improved from 995 to a perfect 1000). Two programs have improved for at least four straight years, led by hockey with improvements in each of the past five years. Gymnastics has seen an APR increase for four straight years. Men's golf improved for the second consecutive year.
Six programs recorded their best scores in the history of the APR. Hockey (998), softball (993) and track and field (983) all posted their highest scores in the 11-year history of the APR. Men's cross country, women's golf and gymnastics all tied previous highs with a perfect 1,000.
APR scores are based on retention and eligibility of each scholarship student-athlete. Each student-athlete can earn four points per year – one point for first-semester eligibility, one point for first-semester retention, one point for second-semester eligibility, and one point for second-semester retention. The total points earned are then divided by total points possible and the decimal place is dropped for the APR score.
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every NCAA Division I athletics team. The most recent scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. The goal of academic reform is improvement, not punishment. Not only does academic reform ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but it also provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.
