Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will host the 2016 MAC Men's Golf Championships on April 28-30 at the Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio. The three-day tournament will consist of 72 holes on the par 71, 6,712 yards golf course at the Highland Meadows Golf Club.
"We are excited to be hosing this year's conference championship tournament," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "It will be a great tournament with lots of talented golfers on a great course that host an LPGA event every year. I expect it to be a competitive four rounds of golf this week."
Competing for the 2016 MAC Championship Title will be nine MAC schools in Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo.
The tournament will begin on Thursday, April 28, with the first and second rounds of play. The teams will play a total of 36 holes on day one beginning with an 8:30 a.m. ET start on both holes No. 1 and No. 10.
Round three of play will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday, April 29, while the final round of play is slated for a 7:45 a.m. ET start time on Saturday, April 30.
"We are looking forward to playing this week at the MAC Championships," continued Farrell. "This is what we have been working up to all season long. This is why we play the schedule that we do and compete in the highly competitive tournaments all year – to best prepare ourselves for the MAC's. We need to focus and be mentally sharp all three days. We just need to execute and play the way we know we are capable of playing."
Coach Farrell will send out a familiar Falcon lineup for the MAC Championships in Jose Narro, Brett Rinker, Pablo Heredia Iglesias, Cameron Michalak and Trey Walker.
Playing for the Falcons at the No. 1 position for the 11th straight tournament this year is Narro. An All-MAC First-Team selection last year in 2014-15, the junior will be teeing-off in his third MAC Championship event this week having finished in a tie for 10th-place at last year's 2015 championships. Narro is second on the team and ranks eighth overall in the MAC with a 73.29 stroke average on the year. He has carded seven sub-par rounds of golf on the year, including rounds of 66, 67, 68, 68 and 69, and has recorded a total of five top-25 place finishes. Last time out, Narro registered a 24th-place finish at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational with rounds of 73, 74 and 72 for a combined 54-hole score of 219, +9.
Also competing for the Falcons for the third straight year at the MAC Championships is Rinker. The 2013-14 MAC Men's Golf Freshman of the Year leads the Falcons and ranks in the top-five in the MAC with a season stroke average of 72.89 over 28 rounds of play. He has carded eight sub-par rounds of golf on the year and recorded seven top-25 place finishes, which includes a seventh-place showing at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational two weeks ago with rounds of 70, 74 and 69 for a combined three-round score of 213, +3. Rinker finished fifth overall and was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team as a freshman in 2014 and registered a 32nd-place finish at last year's MAC Championships.
At the No. 3 spot and playing in his first MAC Championship Tournament is Heredia Iglesias. The Falcon freshman has had a strong season thus far for BGSU, posting a scoring average of 74.32 over 28 rounds of play this year. Teeing-off in every event for the Falcons this year, Heredia Iglesias has posted four top-30 finishes and two top-five finishes, as he took fourth overall at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate with a 54-hole score of 210, -3 under par, and finished fifth at the Cleveland State Invitational with a score of 212, -4 under par. The Spaniard is coming off a final round of 71, even par, at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational on Apr. 11-12 in which he finished in a tie for 47th overall with a three-round combined score of 223, +13.
Teeing-off for the Falcons at the No. 4 slot will be Michalak, who played in last year's 2015 MAC Championships as a true freshman. The sophomore, who placed in a tie for 36th overall at the 2015 MAC Championship Tournament with a 72-hole score of 310, +22, last spring, has played in eight events this year for the Falcons and has posted a stroke average of 76.05 overall. He will look to build on his last 18-hole round, as he closed out the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational with a final round of 71, even par, just two weeks ago.
Like fellow freshman Heredia Iglesias, Walker will be competing in his first conference championship event as a Falcon this week at the No. 5 position in the BGSU lineup. Walker, who has played in seven events for the Falcons on the year, has carded a season stroke average of 78.39 overall in his first year at BGSU. He has turned in a low round of 72 on the year and has carded an 18-hole score of 75 on three different occasions. The Bowling Green, Ohio product will look to cap of his freshman year with a strong finish at the MAC Championships held in nearby Sylvania, Ohio.
The Falcons have won a total of MAC Championship Titles in the program's history – 1956, 1972, 1973, 1978, and in 1983 – and have finished in the top-five a total of 37 times overall since the MAC first began in 1953.
Bowling Green has posted back-to-back sixth-place team finishes over each of the last two years in 2014 and 2015, after finishing in fifth-place overall at the 2013 championships.
